Does anyone have any info from that thread saved?
Images or other threads? Or is it all lost in cyber space, hah.
Any info would be appreciated, looking into building a rear.
Thanks
8.8 conversion info
Re: 8.8 conversion info
haven't seen that thread in a very long time, but I presume that the same principal applies to one of the methods of swapping in a supra rear end.
take the corolla bracket measurements, cut them off.
cut off the 8.8 brackets and discard.
make the corolla bracket measurements on the 8.8, weld on the corolla brackets.
adapt the 8.8's brakes to the corolla system.
add a custom driveshaft.
anyways, that's what i recall of that thread. lots of performance options for that particular rear end if I recall.

Re: 8.8 conversion info
I was looking more for pictures of the jig. I have seen several different versions but this one has not shown up in the search.

skipshift, u da man
I have seen several different ways people have been creative with there jigs. That was the one I was looking for.
Thank you very much.
Re: 8.8 conversion info
Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd just keep this one going.
I'm looking for anyone who has done an 8.8. conversion in an AE86.
What other parts are needed to complete this conversion besides a new driveshaft?
As for the driveshaft. What companies have you guys gone to for one?
Thanks

bumping for info
Re: 8.8 conversion info
Well, this certainly got more attention in the old forum, hah.
Bump for more info
I'm curious to know about the axles. The swaps I have read about narrow one side and use a passenger side axle.
Has anyone used a Mustang 8.8? The axles are equal length.
I'm using Mustang 8.8s and 9" housing ends to. 9" ends are similar to the GTS ends.
I'm going to give my axles to a local shop to shorten and re-spline.
Well, any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 8.8 conversion info
I'm using a Mustang rear end. It's still a lot wider than the factory rear, so shortening would be a good idea. While you have the axles at the machine shop, you may also want to consider having the stud pattern re-machined. The Ford pattern is 4x4.25, which is kind of hard to find wheels for.
It's a pretty straight forward swap. For alignment, you could build a jig - it would be pretty easy out of 2x4s. When I did mine, for the final line up, I used the rear swaybar to center the axle in the chassis and tack-welded it in, then pulled the axle out for finish welding. I also put a bunch of gussets around the attachment points for good measure.

Re: 8.8 conversion info
Narrowing is a must. I'd also fill and drill for the AE stud pattern and put 9" end on it.
I'm building a jig out of steel and using new brackets made out of 3/16 steel. My next brackets will more than likely be 1/8", factory looks to be 3/32nd.
I'm also not going to be putting time into the coil mounts, mine will be for coil-overs only.
I'm just curious to know if there is an interest for them. I saw someone trying to sell one complete less axles for around $850.
I'd be more interested in selling the housings seeing that the internals are very inexpensive.
So, is there any interest? Anyone?

Re: 8.8 conversion info
if trying to keep the corolla as light as possible, go with the smallest diff that will get the job done
Reality is..... there are far too many better lighter rear end options, that would satisfy 99.99% of us.
Anybody actually making enough torque to require an 8.8.... I'd think, would easily be capable
of swappin it themselves

Re: 8.8 conversion info
Which smaller diffs are you referring to? I'm looking at early 80s Toyota truck rear ends. They are stout just not as common.
I definitely think the 8.8 is overkill but, its better to have too much than not enough.
As for lighter, with the amount being narrowed and the excess brackets being removed. I'll have to put them on a scale and
see what the difference is. I had read somewhere that they said it was roughly 50lbs difference between the two. That's
not bad at all.
If anyone is looking at getting, they are more than likely making decent numbers whether stock or swapped.
The thing that caught my interest is, you can have a fully built rear end for the cost of a quality replacement LSD AND have
options to boot.

Re: 8.8 conversion info
Why not a Ford 7.5? It uses the same axleshafts and brakes as the 8.8 and is lighter. You can even get LSDs for them.
