1987 4ac. while trying to get timing set, the timing is WAY BTDC. i can only get it to about 15* or so maxed out with the dist at full CCW. i pull the dist and turn the rotor one tooth CW. i put the cap back at approx half way. car won't start. i turn the cap full in both directions. will not start.
pull dist off again.. put it back one tooth CCW to where i started. car starts and runs great, but still will not budge past 15*. turning the dist cap CW puts the timing waaaaaaay BTDC again.
what is the deal here??
i have noticed the dist has decent side-to-side play before tightening the bolt. does this mean the cam or cam gear is bad? i have yet to pull the valve cover to check.. to tell the truth, i paid $900 for the car and am getting tired of dealing with it. i'll pull it apart IF that could be the issue.
has anyone else had this problem? i plugged both vacuum lines for the dist advance, per the manual i have.
the car runs and idles really well at the 15*.
i put the crank to TDC on cyl one. the timing belt lines up as it should, so cam is not off.
one weird thing: when i line the marks up on the dist gear/body and install the dist, it doesn't seem to be at the #1 spot on the cap. maybe i have the wrong dist?
any help would be appreciated. thanks, guys!
impossible timing!
Re: impossible timing!
This stuff kind of makes my brain hurt... but I think you should
have turned the rotor one tooth CCW instead of CW when trying
to get the adjustment range below 15 deg ???
I don't know what the standard timing is for a 4AC, but I would
guess that 15 BTDC at idle is pretty close.

Lol. my head too. yes. I started a bit ccw which should have been perfect.
Timing with vacuum lines removed/plugged should be 5°. I think maybe I wasn't supposed to disconnect the retard vacuum line.
