AE86 Clutch Questions

Postby aeaeae » Wed Dec 11, 2013 6:23 pm

I need a clutch kit for my 87 AE86 with 4AGEc engine.

What do you recommend for street use?

I'be been investigating the Exedy kit but there seems to be some disagreement as to which part number is correct for my car.
The Exedy website says the correct kit for the ae86 is part #16029 but all other sources say #16042 is the right one.
Can anyone here settle the issue?

Exedy says that 16804A, stage 1 organic clutch kit, fits the AE86. A certain major store denies this.
Can anyone settle this second issue?

I'm running the exedy OEM replacement it works good on me, bought it for $90 from eBay but replaced the release bearing for a koyo one because it's made in china but the others are made in Japan lol

I am currently working on straightening this out so I can be sure I am offering the right products on my website.
I talked to Exedy yesterday and they told me that the GTS kit 16029 has the same throwout bearing as the newer FWD kits but the SR5 and DLX kit 16042 contains a different bearing which should be the correct one for the T50.
ACTs website shows all AE86 using the same bearing for all which lines up with all info I have seen. So either there was a miscommunication between me and Exedy yesterday or they actually list the wrong bearing in their GTS kit.
I am hoping to hear back today with a full breakdown of part numbers in both kits so I know exactly what difference there is and what components are right for what car.

If anyone has installed a 16029 in their 86 I'd love to know if the throwout bearing was the right one or not.

Finally got a response.
Here are the kits they list.

16042 1984 - 1987 COROLLA SPORT DLX RWD; L4; 1.6L; Gas(4AC)

16029 1985 - 1987 COROLLA SPORT GTS RWD, GTS; L4; 1.6L; Gas(4AGEC)

16042 1984 - 1987 COROLLA SPORT SR5 RWD; L4; 1.6L; Gas(4AC)

Exedy said they had the wrong throwout bearing listed in their catalog. They didn't make it clear whether it had the wrong bearing in the kit or if it was just listed wrong on paper but they did say the problem is now resolved and that all of the above use the same bearing and all kits contain the proper bearing.
He said the only difference between the two kits is the 16029 contains a stiffer PP with more clamping force.

16029 can be found here. http://matrixgarage.com/store/ae86-clut ... drivetrain
I'll try to get the 16042 up as well.
If you can find a better price let me know and I'll see what I can do but be aware that there are a lot of knockoffs on ebay and similar places. I get my clutches from Motovicity who gets the clutches direct from Exedy. Exedy or any other brand, if it comes from me you can be sure it's legit and from the manufacturer it says it is.
