4AG Misfiring

Postby ryanjayx » Wed Mar 12, 2014 11:05 pm

Just got my 85 Corolla GTS running for the first time in a year. I pulled the motor, did a timing belt and reset the timing, new cap and rotor/spark plug wires, rebuilt the injectors and replaced the injector clips with new OEM ones. The car runs and drives, but lacks any power. I drove it 7 miles to get it home. Once I got it there, I popped the hood and spit (gross, I know) on the runners of the exhaust manifold. 1 and 2 both sizzled and beaded off, but 3 and 4 didn't even sizzle. When I touched them, they were definitely warm, but not hot. Any ideas? I'm going to check the compression tomorrow afternoon. I also changed the spark plugs from 1&2 to 3&4, but to no avail. 3 and 4 are still only firing half as much as 1 and 2.

Any help is VERY much appreciated.

You answerd your own question. Check compression. You can also pull a wire and put it on a spare spark plug to test the strength of the spark(visually see if its firing and how strong the spark is). Might be plugged injectors to. Who rebuilt them??

Not anyone professional. The filter were plugged on them. All the cylinders are getting fuel though.

Yesterday it was running and then the crank pulley bolt popped out and the crank pulley started to pull off. It didn't come all the way off. It may have stripped that key though. Would this mess up timing?

Shouldnt mess up timing but its possible. it timing was off you would have problems in all 4 cylinders not just 2. Are you sure there getting enough fuel? how did your compression test turn out?

Haven't done compression yet. After the bolt fell out, the car died and won't start at all now. When it's turning over, it sounds like there isn't any resistance when it's turning over.

Start over and do the cam timing from scratch. Take the crank pulley off
and all the timing belt covers. Check the key is still in the slot and that
the crank timing pulley is on the key. Make sure the belt is still on the crank
timing pulley and the guide plate is facing the right way. Replace the lower
timing cover and the crank pulley. Put the bolt and washer back in and
torque to 100 ft-lb.

Get the #1 piston to TDC compression stroke and set the cams in position,
reinstall the belt and tension it. Torque the tensioner. Make sure the rotor
in the dissy is pointing to the #1 spark plug and then fire her up :)
