Corolla AE88/86 Black Limited
Re: Corolla AE88/86 Black Limited
"Shelby is part of Ford not in a sense that theyre the same company but Shelby uses Ford's mustangs and modifies them to sell them as a Shelby Mustang Cobras. So i don't understand what it has to do with this situation."
Look at it this way. Ford built all the Mustangs. Shelby customized some of them, and it was a factory sanctioned part of the original build process. You didn't send your Mustang to Shelby, you ordered it from Ford, who happened to job the rest out. The same way that "all" of the original sunroofs were installed by American Sunroof, and none were done in the same factory the cars were built in.
With the Corolla and other Japanese products, it doesn't matter if you buy US or JD market cars, they all come off the same assembly line. And the US cars all got modified at the port of entry, if you ordered AC or other major accessories. Even though that was a "factory" option it was never installed except at the docks, or the dealership.
So, Shelby? Doesn't matter, that was original equipment ordered from Ford. The same way that a Trueno or a GT-S was all original equipment, ordered from Toyota. Which plant it got built in, what they installed, doesn't matter. It either is or isn't OEM. Sure, you can build a replica of anything, but it still will always be a replica. As opposed to buying the real deal and restoring it.
If nothing else, the VIN in your replica will be wrong. (Well, the driver's side will be wrong along with a mess of stuff under the hood to go with that, too.) So it still is a replica in the end, never will be the same as an original. Look at the auto auctions: Replicas don't sell for anywhere near what a real deal sells for. Might look the same, might drive the same, but it never will be the same. Usually, it is a major dollar loss.

Yeah what does a shelby and ford have to do with replicating something that cant be bought in america? First and foremost i would not buy a mustang just to replicate a mustang cobra. Thats dumb when you can buy a mustang cobra here in America.
As far replicating, everyone who has JDM parts in their car is technically replicating a car thats sold in Japan to include your car. I dont see a harm in that. Its stylish and clean looking. Japan got better goods when it comes to Japanese cars. If you're so against replicating cars that arent sold here in America, why havent you spoken against those who have panda corollas. Nor do I hear anyone else looking down upon panda corollas when theyre a complete replication of the corollas in Japan.
Yes youre right it will only be a replica and never the actual car and so what? Thats why were enthusiast and were in this forum all in all. Were all passionate and artistic for customization.
Yeah id be blowing my money on a replica car but you know what the end product will be so much worth it when this car comes out clean. And when I know how much value this car means to me and when people comment on the rare parts I have on it there wont be a reason to sell it.
We'll just have to see what other enthusiasts like better when you bring your USDM corolla against my BL replica or other JDM corollas at a car show.

"Yeah what does a shelby and ford have to do with replicating something that cant be bought in america?"
Who says you can't buy a JDM RHD Black Limited in America? You want one? I can make a phone call and have it delivered to your front door, if you want to pay for it. Doesn't matter if you want a Shelby or a Corolla, as long as someone is willing to sell, it doesn't matter where the car is located. Any car collector can tell you that. You go where the car is, or you have it shipped. Doesn't matter where that car is. Japan? America? So what?
"As far replicating... Nor do I hear anyone else looking down upon panda corollas when theyre a complete replication of the corollas in Japan."
You haven't been around long enough to hear much. There were plenty of forum threads about custom paint jobs, and how "panda" was unimaginative and overdone. If you're going to do a custom paint job, might as well enjoy it. You're not trying to fool ayone else into thinking the car is something else, you're just doing a custom paint job and "panda" happens to look good on the car.
"Yes youre right it will only be a replica and never the actual car and so what? ...Were all passionate and artistic for customization."
Custom is one thing, homage or counterfeit is another. Where do you draw the line? And why waste money that way? It's your money, by all means enjoy spending it, but yeah, you're going to find other people don't always share your opinion and some of us would call it a silly waste of time and money to build that. At least if you import the real thing, it will have collector's value and retain some worth. "...the end product will be so much worth it..." Well, when you get bored with it, do let us all know what it sells for. If you've ever seen one of the Barrett-Jackson auctions or anything similar, you might suspect that when you are done the car will be worth LESS than a straight restored GT-S, because "oddball replica" often has no market. LHD? Not a replica, just an oddball car.
"We'll just have to see what other enthusiasts like better when you bring your USDM corolla against my BL replica or other JDM corollas at a car show." Bring my car to a car show? ROFL. 27 years as a daily driver and it isn't a show car. Isn't meant to be one. If i wanted to drop the money into a concourse restoration? Yeah, having a single-owner car with matching VINs all around might not get attention, but it would get the higher selling price as "authentic" instead of "fanboy". That's just the way the market goes.

Man you sound like youre all butt hurt. It's not that serious. So what if it's not an authentic BL.
Yeah I said you can't buy a BL here in America as in you can't buy one because they were never made here in America, but of course you can import one.
Would I want one? Of course like anyone who likes corollas, but would I spend the money when I have a corolla sitting in the garage? No. The cost of importing one isn't a problem as the military will take care of that for me when I get stationed in Japan. But the cost to get it street legal wouldn't be worth it.
Panda paint trying to fool anyone? If you want to be technical yes actually. It's taking a corolla and trying to make it look as JDM corolla as possible. How many people just have Panda color scheme with USDM bumpers? Come on now. Almost everyone with Panda paint has JDM bumpers JDM Lights. Yeah you're right it's over done but who cares. Its clean just as a BL appearance scheme would look boss. Corollas with GTV paintjob that have JDMs all around it. It's exactly what I'm doing with my black corolla. Taking the outside appearance of a BL just like every Panda corolla that wants to be like Takumi Fujiwara, or American corollas that have the GTV appearance. So every corolla with this appearance is technically an "oddball" to you.
Barret Jackson? Seriously since when did they have corollas in auction? Dude it's a corolla. This car isn't worth much in an eyes of any collector when you have other classic cars competing with it. You think a collector will be satisfied spending his money on some corolla when he has a chance to buy a 65 Mustang, GTO, Chevelle, Camaro, Corvette or a complete restored rat rod?
Tired of it? If I did get tired of it I'll just change the appearance. I'll still have these rare parts that people just so they could get their hands on them.
Fanboy? I'm not the one who puts out so much care in what other people's projects are and how they should be done. If anyone here is a fanboy it's probably you. Getting all hurt and crying over what's "not original" and "authentic" wah wah wah. Ok so you're the original owner cool story bro. You're car isn't going to be priced any higher then someone who's car is already made and has the setup going. As a consumer I would invest my money in something that has parts put into it and not something so stock. It saves us the time of finding the parts and waiting. And if you sell that for more then 3K then you're out of your mind.

thanks man i appreciate it. I'm sure i'll hit some road bumps but when the pieces make the puzzle it'll be one nice car.
Re: Corolla AE88/86 Black Limited
"Barret Jackson? Seriously since when did they have corollas in auction?"
They never have, AFAIK. And as long as their market, and all the "collectors" insurers, says riceburners aren't classics, they're not likely to. When and if they do, the value of all the riceburners will go up. Or at least, the collectible ones will.
And when they do? Yeah, they'll follow the same rules that "collectibles" of all kinds always follow. The real thing brings the big bucks, the look-alikes? Never anywhere near. In comparable condition, the real deal always outsells the replica. And always be a huge margin. you'll lose less money importing the real thing (and either converting it or getting a limited use permit) that you will really converting something else. Doing a half-way conversion, like your post about doing a half turbo job, may make you happy--but it will have limited value to anyone else. Fantasy cars work well at SEMA and shows, but that's about it.
As I said before, it is your money. You like it? By all means, buy it. Someone paid $32 million for a Picasso, he liked it. I think he's nuts, but that was his money and his choice too.
You just don't get it. I never criticized your choice. I'm just trying to warn you up front, you're going to take a bath when you unload that creation. I never met a serviceman who had gobs of time and money to burn.

What's with all the beef? I thought the point of club is helping And support.
He wants his car like that. What's your problem with that. Everyone wants there car a certain way, and so what if people do jdm follow a "hype" or what ever. I don't see why it even gets under your skin and to actually keep going with your blah blah blah.
Black limited looks really cool boss. It's rare and parts will be hard to find. You will have fun tho. The whole point of have one is just working on it learning about it and loving it.
Just glad to have another 86 owner in club!

Good luck finding all the correct parts for a Black Limited
Here's a steering wheel and door decal set on Yahoo,
http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b141433096
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e129565954
The steering wheel is a leather wheel with the orange font horn pad, these can be got from other cars though maybe an AE82 but I'm not sure

I know not everyones going to think my car will be sh^T hot and that's cool. But whatever it may be JDM or USDM. I'll always give plus comments to other owners for having a fun car.

I could give no fucks to people who have an opinion about my hachi. I do what i like, when i like, how i like it. Your car is exactly that, YOUR CAR. do what you do man, i hope things work out the best for you. I live in tokyo and have seen a few GT APEX turenos that were built into a BL, they look nice. Even here it is extrememly rare to see a true BL,my friend has one now that he is repaing (from an accident someone else did) but also in its past it was painted panda. kinda different but thats what that guy want to do.
Re: Corolla AE88/86 Black Limited
Don't listen to these clowns Kidd .... Do what you want with YOUR car. All these guys telling you how it's NOT real and what not are rolling around on JDM bumpers, JDM tails, JDM wheels and JDM engine swaps, we never got those "JDM" parts here, so who's front'n? Do what makes you happy, set your goal and take your time to get there. A friend of mine here in Chicago has collected a majority of the parts for the Black limited build, he has almost everything minus the front seats and he has paid alot of money for some stuff and for other stuff he got good deals on. He bought off yahoo japan and other connects in japan as well. There's a member on here who has a black limited already, I dont know if its "REAL" or what but it looks good and he likes it and that's all that matters. Good Luck!

If you are doing it for your personal use and because you like how the black limited looks, by all means go for it and have fun, I as well think it will look very nice. However, please do not build this car and then a week after you finish it post it up for sale for around $10,000+ for being a "black limited replica" and "rare". It does happen, and it is not cool.
