Looking for more power on my Bluetop 86 Help wanted !
Hey guys so I recently bought a 86 with a blue top . I'm already looking to go more power, I was thinking turbo unless someone changes my mind otherwise , I know these motors aren't the best to handle much boost. I need alot of help because I'm unfamiliar with these engines and turbo. Where would I start and how much should I be looking to spend?

It all depends how knowledgeable you are with working on engines.
I had a pretty quic little car in my hands and i had done was
.020 oversize pistons
new main bearings
new rod bearings
shaved head
decked block
3angle valve job
adjustable camgears
Stock Snorkel intake
TRD Header
5zigen exhaust
then go ahead and upgrade the suspension and tires and around the corners this thing will be more than enough.
Take it from someone that has gone turbo... its not as easy as just slapping a turbo on and lets go. There isnt even a turbo kit for these cars, everything has to be pieced together. Im about 7 months into my turbo build and i just barely have it streetable. Stuff is still breaking here and there, but thats to be expected with trial and error builds.

For someone like you, i would suggest to find a nice Header. TRD, PaceSetter, OBX(if you really have to) are known brands. Then go ahead and upgrade your air filter, if youd like (i never did) Supposedly the snorkel helps out with the torque.
Freshen up the motor by doing an oil change, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Distributor cap, Distributor Rotor, and put in all new coolant. I would also google or youtube the use of "SEAFOAM" it will help remove carbon deposits from your engine and crankcase. And with old cars like this, the TVIS is usually stuck closed so the seafoam will help a bit.
After all that, just enjoy the car dude, these cars are not meant to be fast in a line, but more around the corners. Slowly but surely upgrade your suspesion and get some good sticky tires, and then the engine blows worry about what you can do. Maybe by then your knowledge will grow and you can jump into something more complicated. Just read read read all you can about these cars and dont be afraid to ask questions.

Terry... what are you familiar with? For turbo parts and advice, Matrix Garage has a lot of parts, and advice on boosted builds.
Try not to use color codes there is some cross confusion because of them. Read this - http://www.mr2.com/forums/threads/87423 ... tification - it's a good start. REMEMBER - these engines are now 22 years old or older... many will have mixed parts because of their previous owners

If you aren't very knowledgable about engines, you should probably stick pretty close to stock. As you start modifying things, they tend to increase in complexity and unreliability. This is one of the reasons you see so many swapped cars on CL. What seemed like a great idea turns out to be a bottomless money pit.

Re: Looking for more power on my Bluetop 86 Help wanted !
Complexity is extremely relative to skill but getting a turbo with a few PSI boost running is not something I consider to be challenging. Most of the parts are available. I can always make anything that's not and that the builder isn't able to do themselves.
A lot of it comes down to strategy as well.
ToeKnee805 and I obviously have about as opposite strategies as you could have. Granted my swap was on a GZE AW11 which does change things a bit when it comes to tuning but not really installation. My supercharger died so I ordered an NA intake system. Pulled the car into the garage and out 8 hours later converted to NA. I drove it like that for the next 4 months or so while I planned my turbo build and acquired parts. I pulled the car back into the garage and 24 hours pulled it out driving and boosting. It could have been done in less time but I was stupid and tried to use my oil cooler drain for the turbo oil drain. I quickly realized this would not work and had to pull the pan and weld it up then and there. Doing it again I would have gotten another pan, modified it and had it ready to go.
I also welded up the turbo back exhaust system at the same time.
My next build was my Blacktop Turbo which did take months messing with it in my spare time.
I do agree that it would be wise to not get in over your head or do something that would take forever to finish or cause you to get overwhelmed and walk away.
Hopefully you find some useful info in here.
