How bad is ring and pinion failure?

I just noticed the other day after lowering my car with coilovers and installing a t3 panhard bar that i am getting a good bit of rear end whine/howl/moan. I never noticed it before with relatively stock suspension. I mentioned it to the service guy at Toyota and they said it was coming from the rear axle and that theyd need to tear it down to inspect it. Im guessing its the ring and pinion on the differential, but was wondering how bad is this.... main reason i ask is because of this older thread i found...

Catastrophic rear end failure is pretty rare. Broken axles... yes. A few
teeth of the pinion... yes. Bearing failures... can happen. But in most
cases you only get into this situation by abusing the clutch or ignoring
the obvious signs of wear and tear. Any unusual rattle, clunk, noise,
vibration or tightness should be investigated.

The T3 panhard has heim joints. So not only does it offer the benefit of
increased vibration, but also it will transmit the high frequency sounds
of the working parts inside the rear end doing their stuff. Now your
car has become a sound box, and you are inside it !! So you will hear
noises you did not notice before :?

If the car is now lower than it was before, you might want to look at
checking the pinion angle. Traction brackets or adjustable upper links
might be a good investment.

Dual heim joints make for lots of noise transmitting from the rear diff to the chassis. Try the stock panhard and if it's back to normal, that's the reason why.

This is normal for heim joint pan hard bars like this. Less rubber = more NVH (noise, vibration, harmonics).

Ya, I was wondering about converting the stock panhard to an adjustable type with polyurethane bushies. Haven't found many ppl that have though. ..
