Hey, I drove my car today and it drove just fine. Then when I needed to go somewhere 4 hrs later, I tried starting it and it wouldn't start. I do not think that it is the starter because I could hear it cranking. I am not sure if it is the distributor or alternator. And if it is those 2, how would I know which one really is the problem? I have tried bump starting it in 2nd gear and reverse and it wouldn't start still. I thought that maybe my battery was just dead so I tried to jump it but still nothing. I also have tried starting it and tapping the gas and still nothing. When I try to start it, I hear the fan spinning. The rev's also are not going up, it stays at 0 when I try to start it. Just need some opinions on what it could be or how I could determine what the problem is. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to club4AG

If the starter motor still cranks the engine and you can hear it turning over
like usual, but it doesn't start... the starter motor is OK. The alternator just
charges the battery, so it can't stop the engine from starting.

When you turn the key ON, do you get the same number of lights lit up as
usual ? Or are you missing some/all of them ?

If the tacho needle usually gets up off the peg when cranking, but it doesn't
now, it could be because you don't have any power to the coil. And it you don't
have any power to the coil there won't be any spark and the engine won't run.
If you have a multimeter or a test light, turn the key ON and check if there is
12V to ground at the coil positive terminal. If not, check the 15A EFI fuse in
the underhood fusebox.

Was able to figure out what happened. Been so busy, forgot to reply back on here. Turns out there was a fat chunk of teeth of the timing belt missing. It wasn't noticed because it wrapped around the crankshaft. When we moved the crankshaft a bit, we noticed about 5 in of teeth missing from the belt and just replaced it. The car is now up and running again! Thanks for responding though!

Hey... at least you had something more interesting than the usual
boring electrical fault. I guess the crankshaft was turning without
driving the cams ? So lucky the 4AGE is a non-interference engine
