T-50 issues

Postby the85zenki » Fri Nov 11, 2016 1:38 pm

Hi everyone. I have a unmolested 1985 AE86 GTS, and out of no where, it won't go into reverse. Fluid is fine, when running, will go into all other gears, up shifting or down shifting very smooth, but it won't go into reverse, not even with the car turn off. Any suggestions

will it go into gear when the car is shut off? Could be the throw out bearing.

I had the same problem about 4 years ago. The synchro has a spring clip that hold three dog keys on the inside of the hud. The spring actually got mis-located that hold the dogs on the under side of the hub. One end of the spring clip was protruding above the hub, preventing the hub from sliding into reverse. I had to spilt the trans case and repositioned the spring clip back under the dog key. That lasted only a 100 miles before it slipped back out. Which required me to disassemble the trans, including pressing the bearing off the tail shaft. When I went to the Toyota dealer to get new parts, including the new dog keys which hold the spring clips in place. I was told they are longer available. So you will prabably have to find a T-50 that you can used for parts. After looking at the total cost to rebuild the trans, I just got an imported trans for about half the price of rebuilding one.
