The time has come to replace my starter and I'm looking at some different options. I'll probably get a new aftermarket starter but I hear mixed results on different options. Mainly I'm looking through Rock Auto. What starters would you recommend? The car I have is a '86 GTS, T50 trans, stock 4AGE

I think the only other bolt on option worth considering is the Planatary gear reduction type 0.8kw starter, 2.85kg: P/N 28100-15190 for a AE92.
This is the type with the long through bolts. It does not look like a reduction starter at first, but it has planatary gears inside. It came on some AE92s with 4A-GE. Its main advantage is that it is very light.

Thanks jondee86! I think I'll just go with a standard AE86 starter for now. Should be enough for my needs

And then get a nice Accord starter. That way parts will be easier to come by in the future.

Although rebuilding a starter is quite easy.

Also want to clean the starter wire contact points and after that I would put a light coat of di-electric grease.

Planetary reduction is amazing.

I've got a '96 F250 with the 7.3L diesel. it was slightly slow turning over, and found that the 2003 superduty starter bolted in, and was a planetary reduction starter. Rockauto had one brand new for 80 bucks. KILLER deal. after that starter was put in, the engine turns over SO much faster.

it was at least five pounds lighter, and about half the size. I do not know if that difference will scale to the starter on a 4AGE, since they're already pretty tiny.

I wanted to bump this old thread because I’m also in need of a starter......AGAIN......

So first let me say that Sam and the guys at SQ are simply amazing. However; I went the honda starter route and had nothing but clearance issues.

1st setup: AW11 Manual rack with AW11 Manual Yoke. I actually had to order a button head bolt for the starter just to get clearance between the starter and the yoke. It no longer rubbed or ‘stuck’ until hitting bumps around corners. NO GOOD.

2nd setup: OEM AE86 Manual Rack with OEM AE86 Manual Yoke. Better Clearance, but still comes very close to the yoke during rotation.

Maybe it’s my car, but I just haven’t been comfortable with the fit which makes me sad, but I just thought I would offer up my opinion.

Not knowing what an oem runs of late, I've had good luck with acdelco and Denso units. Usually for a starter I buy local for a quick exchange in the event it goes bad assuming the prices are close.

You could also check the brushes and contacts on your current starter. I got a new set of solid copper contacts for under $15 shipped a while back.

Contact after abuse counts, like a little kiss to the dirt & coating, or like it's been hammered on?
Rebuilds not inspected and/or disassembled are iffy, otherwise great & can last a long time.

Yeah I've had some issues with starters but it went like this..

Starter in the car when I bought it was aftermarket; started sticking and then eventually wouldn't start.
Starter 2 was the OEM Honda and it started having the same issues.
Bought a new OEM Honda starter and it lasted a very short time before I started getting clicking again.
Realized, maybe it's not these starters, but the relay switch..Replaced that.
It ran great for awhile and then boom..Starter issues again.
Re-installed OEM honda unit and it's been working great. I just don't like how it can rub the yoke sometimes.

It was a sad and sorry day when crank handles went out of fashion...
