My differential exploded...

Alright guys so I recently replaced my clutch, pressure plate and resurfaced the flywheel. Then I started hearing clunking from the rear end. I guess my clutch was so worn it would slip enough to not clunk. Anywho a day later I launched it (nothing crazy) and kaboom! Suddenly I’m slowly rolling to the side of the road and stranded. Managed to break a hole on the differential. So I got it apart today and found bits and pieces of what used to be the gears inside. Now my question is what third members or carrier (not exactly sure what it’s called) will fit? I have a 10 bolt differential which I believe is a T series but it has drum brakes. I’ve heard that the old Toyota panel van share the same diff. As well as a certain celica Supra. Also in the future I would like to replace those drums with disks. Which ones can I use and how would I go about doing it? Here’s some pictures of the damage

A possible Toyota option is the MA46 axle used on the light pickups and vans. But only the 2WD Van will have a 4 lug mounting while the others will be 5 or 6 wheel lugs. They are all within a few millimeters of being the same width, but none would not be a direct bolt in. You are probably better off finding another Corolla axle to swap in. DaveW7

Thanks Dave, I managed to find this 1.8 Corolla one at the junk. Same 10 bolt pattern just that mine has one bolt hole that’s elongated and this one I found doesn’t. Otherwise looks exactly the same. That shouldn’t be a problem right? Just use a smaller bolt.

Upon further inspection it has a smaller pinion gear. My old one has 14 teeth and the new one has 12 teeth. Also the ring gear looks a bit beefier. I will post pics up tomorrow for comparison and maybe a Toyota guru can identify what 3rd member/axle I got from the junkyard. I will be cleaning my old diff housing and the new 3rd member since there is plenty of metal shards bits and pieces in there. I’m thinking about using diesel fuel for cleaning should this be okay?

Why did your diff break like that in the first place? This is not a common occurrence..

They still sell third members, a new one just sold on Egay about 1 or 2 weeks ago. I think someone is still making them or they are NOS. I've seen them pop up every once in awhile.

Cloudstrife, I live in the Dominican Republic and here nothing goes to waste. There’s tons of places that have a plethora of parts for old vehicles. Used obviously but you can find them in decent condition. As far as why it popped like that, no idea. I’m still trying to figure that out. My 4 link bushings are hella worn out even though I doubt that was the cause I’m replacing them while I’m at it since I have the differential off. I believe the one I aquired is from a ke70 since they had it marked Corolla 1.8.

No problem man, I get you. I have a bunch of cars friends from PR, it's pretty amazing what people do with just ingenuity and dedication! I just asked about the diff, because to me I would assume someone ran the diff without enough fluid..

NOS is NewOldStock. New old stock (abbreviated NOS) is merchandise being offered for sale which was manufactured long ago but that has never been used. The items may not be produced anymore, and the new old stock may represent the only market source of a particular item.

wear increases clearences/slop = more shock = damaged parts
oem rolla diff gonna b S-series 6.38", not a T-series 6.7".
Firewall tag would have the oem diff code: Sxxx use it to look up the gear ratio online

Alright, it’s not NOS it was from a used Corolla 1.8 they disassembled it and have them sitting there. Yes that’s basically what I bought but it’s all together ringgear pinion gear and spiders gears and all. It’s basically just ready to go into the axle, well that is after a good clean.

Jinx that’s exactly what I thought, how much free play/slop should I have at the pinion flange generally? Also I was told the T-series was rolla GTS and has 10 bolt unlike the S-series 8 bolt for sr5’s please clear this up for me. Here is some pics of the new to me third member from the 1.8 Corolla which is 3.5:1 ratio.
