Powers steering rack removal
Help removing the powers steering rack on my 86 I'm swapping it out for a manual rack. I have the rack mounting bolts out but it's so tight in there it looks like i need to raise the engine a couple of inches to get it out. Any suggestions.

Re: Powers steering rack removal
raising your car would be helpful. you need your tires off, remove tie rods, loosen up the u joint.
if you have power steering lines, remove them.

Sorry forgot to mention I've removed all of that it just seems like I have to raise the engine to get it out
Re: Powers steering rack removal
you have to unbolt the subframe and drop the engine down.
the rack will not come out if you dont do this.

Re: Powers steering rack removal
You can remove the ps rack without lifting the engine or dropping the cradle. To do this you have to remove the 'rack-to-rack' fluid hard lines on the transmission side of the rack. Once the lines are removed the rack can be snaked out easily. I've done this personally so it's not hearsay.

Remove block-to-bellhousing brackets, remove exhaust pipe bracket, remove rack's hard lines, then raise engine.
Re: Powers steering rack removal
i cut my lines off then just yanked it out
Re: Powers steering rack removal
I just did this yesterday. cut or undo all lines to the rack, rotate rack pinion shaft toward the rear of the car. pull your drivers side rim as if you were taking a sharp right and slide out the rack. if it gets caught on the mounts, slide it back and forth as you work the mount out.
