Do sticky tires rock chip our cars?

Postby Ava92 » Fri Mar 27, 2020 11:19 am

Wondering if true sticky tires like Hoosiers, etc, throw up a lot of rocks on our car.
Not looking to damage my paint.
So far the stickiest tire I've had was re71r and i didn't get any chips on the exterior.

Wheel sets are 15x8 +0 and 15x8.5. Car is fairly low. With oem skirts
Thank u guys

I believe that it is more tire and air temp related, then tire compound. Even with road tires on hot summer days they get sticky enough to through up a lot of stones. Davew7

Yeah... if the tread width on the Hoosiers is no more than the RE71r and you are using the same
wheels, then you should be OK. The trajectory of a chip thrown by the tire will be more or less
a straight line. So you can get an idea of where the chip will go by using a straightedge (yardstick
or similar) placed against the outside edge of the tread at road level.

If the stick shows that a chip can clear the mudflap and side skirt and still be heading for the
bottom part of the door where it tucks in, your will get some stone chips. There and where the
rear fender starts to flare out in front of the wheel arch.

Cheers... jondee86

Assuming you have smooth paint, some clear vinyl wrap works very well as a guard. Could diy or swing through a dealership and catch their mobile guy that does it.

The chip guard specific vinyl is typically thicker, for what it's worth. Odds are amazon/ebay would have you supplied cheap and easy.

Beyond that or more costs of clear, bit of an inevitability. At least you can peel the old vinyl off and re-apply the new stuff without mixing 2k paint.
