Worn Out Driveshaft Center Bearing

Postby alabamaguy » Sat Jul 20, 2013 12:54 pm

Hey guys,
I've developed a clunking noise at low speeds, and sometimes even sounds like something is making contact with the underside of the car. Usually only at low speeds, however. I've jacked the car up and the only thing I can find that is even close to being loose is the center support bearing on the driveshaft. I can grab the driveshaft and move it around, does it sound like this could be the problem?

No, unless that soft rubber around it is completely gone or it can be pushed with 1 finger to make metal to metal contact.
Any witness marks from making contact? How'r the U-joints?
Exhaust touching anything or broken mounts?

Hmm. Basically I can grab the driveshaft and move it around, basically compressing the rubber. I haven't checked the u-joints yet, the exhaust is tight and out of the way the of everything best that I can tell. Honestly, it sounded like exhaust hitting something to me but I couldn't find anywhere where it could make contact. I'll have to get under there and have a closer look if the center bearing isn't a likely culprit..

Sorry to thread jack, but how often do the center bearings go bad? I am swapping to 5 speed and bought a used driveshaft to install, should I replace the center bearing?

Rubber type stuff gone so it loosely flops around, or is the bearing seizing up & tight or very loose or feel rough & notchy when turning, or seal/s gone & letting in dirt? If not, no.
How'r its U-joints?

Everything seems pretty sturdy, nothing shaky or loose, age is mostly what im worried about.

Turn/spin with any roughness at all?
Been pressure washed?
Otherwise it'll outlast 2 cars.

I would say the center bearing are worn. i had the same issue on my drive shaft. if you look on amazon you can find a chinese center bearing for about 15 bux or so. if you want the oem bearing then expect to pay about 80 bux to 120. it does sound like with all the play that your center bearing is bad. mine had that much play too and i had simmilar sounds
