T3 Tall Shift Kit

Postby urzu725 » Mon Oct 28, 2013 12:00 am

Hey guys, has anyone had any experience with the Tall Shift Kit for an AE86? The link is provided below.

https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/ae86 ... 86-corolla

I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it vs T3's short shifter. I am mainly concerned with the height of it. Some people say the short shift is too short. Maybe the tall shift is too tall? I don't know. Thanks for the input.

The regular short shift kit made the shifter too low for me to reach (I am a 6'1 guy with longer than usual legs).
Added a shifter extension similar to the one on the T3 website and it was perfect with a typical sphere shift knob.
Throws were not overly long either.

Thanks for the reply. I'm running a stock shifter now, so I thought that making it lower 1.5 inches may have been too low for me. Then again, I'm only 5'9" lol

Maybe I can clear up a bit of confusion here ??
1. What is commonly referred to as a "short shifter" is actually a "quick shifter". It is
designed to change the geometry of the shifter to make changing gears quicker, and
by coincidence, this also makes the throw shorter
2. On the other hand, a tall shifter will make the throw longer, and gear changes slower.
3. The information on the T3 website has copied the short shifter details over onto
the tall shifter page. The tall shifter will be taller than the stock shifter, not shorter.
4. Provided the bushings in the stock shifter are in reasonable condition, it will do
a very good job of shifting gears. If you want a taller shifter get one of those diamond
cut dildo shift knobs... add a bit of JDM bling to your car. Otherwise, save your money
and spend it on something that will actually give you a performance improvement.

hey thanks for the input. The "tall shifter" will have a longer throw than the "short shifter." It says that (40% vs 55%). I was simply asking about the height of the actual shift lever itself because my shifter is kind of wobbly and was trying to make it tighter. However, I didn't know whether the short shifter, being 1.5 inches lower than stock, would be too low. Conversely, I also did not know whether the tall shifter, being 4 inches taller than the short shifter (2.5 inches taller than stock) would be too tall. Obviously, it would really be a pain if I ordered the tall shifter and it was too tall or the short shifter and it was too short. Just seeing if anyone had any first hand experience with either one.

Pretty sure that T3 do a bushing kit for tightening up the stock shifter.

Yup the T3 shifter bushing kit makes a huge difference. For me it was about $33 shipped.
My shifter was really sloppy, when i put these new bushing in, BAM! it felt much tighter than before.
But if you want to save a couple bucks, buy the shifter rebuild kit and the shifter extender, that way if it's too long for you, it can be removed easily.

I have the T3 short shifter and love it.

Its way faster and tighter shifting that stock.

As far as a height thing I'm about 6'3" and have my seat all the way back and can reach it fine.

Jondee86 is right about the bushing rebuilt kit too. Its way cheaper and gets it all nice and tight.

As far as a longer handle shifter, i really don't see the point cuz it makes shifting take longer and depending on ur fly wheel weight you already have to blap the gas and rev match with a short throw but everyone drives different

My main concern was just the height of the shifter. I am not a tall guy so my arms aren't that long. T3 says that both the Short and Tall Shift Kit reduces the stock throw length so I wasn't too concerned with the throws. Still, thanks for all of the good advice and info.

i have the short throw shifter with the extended shaft, i feel its a night and day difference in throw , its way better(smoother/close gears), also i love it being taller, way closer to the steering wheel, really enhanced my driving experience. deff recommend it.

@yogi59fifty
So do you have the shifter that's in the link above? The tall shifter is a short shifter (although not short as the short shifter), just a few inches taller than the short shifter.

I had a shifter extender previously, Loved it. only thing, with the added leverage and a little too much enthusiasm into 3rd gear. Ended up being jammed in 3rd, could not get it out no matter how hard i pulled. Just drove home, in traffic, in 3rd gear, with a TRD clutch on a toda Flywheel.... talk about fun.. lol. I did it to 2 trannies in a row, so the extender went into the tool box.

I do like the look of the extended quick shift. no clue if the added leverage could be disaster though.

I've gone back and forth with the t3 short shifter assembly and the stock assembly with the t3 bushings. (I simply swapped the bushings between the two - same t3 bushings.) My take:

T3 has a tighter and snappier feel with much less play. It seems to be less notchy as well. (I assume this is all due to the stronger spring they use.) Shifting effort is slightly increased. The t3 setup makes the shifter feel closer to that of a 21st century sports car

I'm 6'3" with long legs and have no problem reaching the shifter.

Unfortunately I haven't tried their new long shifter setup.

I found the T3 shifter to position the gear knob too low for me, but with a 70mm tall gear knob it's fine. I do have the back of my seat touching the front of the rear seat and the steering wheel spaced back 160mm though.

I'm 5'10" and I had to lean forward to reach 5th gear; real bummer. So I got a bootleg eBay short shifter, it had a two piece lever that kept coming unscrewed while driving; super bummer but the shift action was fabulous. Now I have a TRD shifter with a T3 bottom bushing and it's super hella tight. I added a giant tall pry bar handle on top and it's super great. I can reach all 5 gears easily with the tall handle and remain planted in my seat.

I just installed my t3 tall shift kit on mine and I love it, it takes all the slop out and doesn't sit too low out of reach like the short might have, the throw isn't all that short due to the added length but is shorter then stock
