Hi guys. A couple days ago my 3tc blew up. So I am now looking into some other swaps.
My budget is not very big <$1200...
I am looking for at least 200 hp at the crank.
I would prefer to stay with a Toyota engine so I can keep my trans and driveshaft.
My non Toyota options are Ford Mustang 5.0 HO (I already have one) or a Mitsubishi 4g63.
What would you guys recommend? I am leaning toward just rebuilding. But options are nice
engine swaps?

Re: engine swaps?
You need a bigger budget or a more realistic goal.
How much does a Mustang 5.0 engine weigh ?

Re: engine swaps?
With a $1200 budget I hope you can do all the work yourself. Even then there are only a few that would fall under that price.
If it's a newer motor it will cost more. If it's an older motor I wold highly reccomend a full rebuid which can eat up $1200 pretty quickly.
I don't know much about the 3TC but I have heard it's a great motor. Have you considered rabuilding it and doing a turbo and megasquirt or something fun like that?
Even that would exceed your budget but it seems like one of the cheaper solutions.

Sounds to me like a good 150-200 lbs more than a 1GR or 2GR. I bet 50-100 more than a 2JZ.
The other thing to think about is center of mass. A V6 like the GR will help move the center of mass back further than an I6 or V8.

Actually a Ford 302 is pretty lightweight. If I remember correctly it actually weighs less than a 2JZ. The ford 302 is around 460 pounds with aluminum heads, about 540 with iron heads. Thats also an iron block, they make aluminum blocks. A 2jz is like 600 pounds. A 4age is around 250. Those are the weights I found for complete engines. You can make 360 naturally aspirated horsepower on a 302 very easily and in a car this light it would be a rocketsled.

It looks like you are right about the JZ. I did a quick search and found like 4 different posts that put it in the 400 range but looking again it looks like they were BS.

They are right and wrong. Its about 400 for the engine without accessories, intake, exhaust and turbos. It doesnt come up very often in performance talks but a Ford 3.8 V6 that is stroked to a 4.3 can make about 900 hp boosted. Mine made 675 rwhp and 499 lb-ft of torque at 17 psi. its lighter than a 302, sits further back, and uses the same bellhousing.

They are partially correct. Thats about how much one weighs without accessories, intake and exhaust sides and the turbos. I am thinking about using a Ford 3.8 stroked to 4.3and doing a remot turbo in the trunk. If i get stupid and want 500+rwhp.

This... my 302 is alum. Heads. With gt40 intake and ho cam. Should be ~220hp as it sits. A port and polish could bring it to ~275. And it only costs like ~$200 to rebuild it. But then I would need new front suspension, trans, and driveshaft.... thats the hold back on that.

I only raced one. And beat one. He couldn't drive and I stated that... anyhow... I went drifting with a buddy and then on the drive back after a bite to eat, it just died. And the damage is bad.
I am likely going to build a new 3tc. And go that route
Re: engine swaps?
You need a bigger budget to get out of the 3TC. Otherwise your only feasible option is to rebuild. All of the options you listed will require substantial custom work. None of those will work with your transmission without a custom adapter. None of those will bolt into the car without custom mounts. Just rebuild what you have unless you fall into a pit of money. In which case, give me a call and I'll come help you.
