Bought new car : smell like gas

Postby Dobs » Sat Feb 01, 2014 6:53 am

Hey guys, i just gave a deposit on an ae86. Car is fine and run strong. But when driving the cabin smells like gasoline. There is no visible leak under the car or in the boot. My question is the following, what could it be and in the worse case how hard/how expensive is it to fix ? Thanks

Leaking injectors seals ? Leaking connection at fuel rail or
fuel filter ? Needs to get fixed, but should just be a case of
tightening up a connection, or replacing some copper washers
or o-rings.

Cheers... jondee86

Make sure your charcoal cannister is hooked up and functioning properly.
There are also instructions in the FSM on blowing it out and inspecting it.
If that doesn't fix it then you can move onto the more expensive and harder things. Whatever you do I wouldn't suggest driving it till you find the problem.

check the spark plug wires. mine started smelling like unburned gas till i found out one of the spark plug wires had come undone. plugged it back in. no more gas smell.

Does it still have a catalytic converter? Removing that on a rich running vehicle can provide you with some rather strong fuel odors.

Beyond the obvious headache while driving and fuel mileage, it's something that needs addressing. Engine fires / washing out cylinders don't do you any favors. I'll echo the FSM advice.

Here's a link to the service manuals online if you don't already have it.

check if the charcoal canister has been removed. if it is missing then that is probably your issue.
