Re: OST-043: Deutscher größerer Ventilkopf
I agree, got to be Germany. I know that Knopf means head, so ventilated head?
Rick
Re: OST-043: Deutscher größerer Ventilkopf
Deutscher größerer Ventilkopf means literally German Larger Valve Head, or as slang, "Big Valve" head.
So I am assuming that this head from Germany is different than the US version as it comes already with bigger valves?
How about the port sizes/shapes? Are they the same or also different?
Hank

no, no... no assuming..... it is FROM Georgia, and it CURRENTLY is a conventional smallport... it will become a "Big Valve" head

this is one of Kelford's bigger cam options - 193HV-A...
and the specs...
Question: What does that cam card tell me that adds to my work????
The head is pretty "skanky"....
Disassembly goes smoothly enough....
Journals in decent shape.... and chambers not too bad... although the valve seats have seen a great deal of moisture, good thing those seats will be removed for larger seats

yep.... I'll need to clearance each cam lobe so that it can rotate without obstruction

Yes it is a good thing.........
This is #8 valve's seat
And these are #5, 4, and 3

as a final step.... yes... but there is a different process the machine shop uses to get it cleaned... once cleaned chemically, then it got glass beaded. and to make sure there was no glass beads left... the galley plugs were removed, the galleys cleaned, and the head threaded for thread in galley plugs

Is this standard work for all the heads you have cleaned there? I ask because I really like this idea. A Honda cylinder head I picked up had all its threaded plugs removed. Seems like a good idea especially for cleaning.
Is it possible (or recommended) to have the head coated, in a heat-shedding ceramic type coating?

How do valve seats even get like this? Before I rebuilt I know my engine was sitting in the POs shed for 2 years without being started..., but when I took it apart and looked at the head the seats weren't like this at all. Was this caused a blown HG? I'm just curious.

Not all the heads have received this treatment, but many have.

The head it self.... I've seen a few with coatings on them... not sure how they work...... What I have heard that very well may work... is a ceramic coating in the exhaust bowls, and ports

Water could very well have been sitting in this head... I'm just speculating... but from the condition I got it in, it would not surprise me if the head was @ a salvage yard sitting in a pile..........

Top view has the intake side deburred, as well as having the lifter bucket bores shaped to allow the cam unobstructed passage. Bottom view has intakes, and exhaust side done.
a bit closer view of deburring the casting.
and a bit closer view of the bucket mods required for this set of cams

from another forum wrote:Which, will of course be, another flow test (before any port work) to determine the benefits of oversized valves in a 4age head.
Right?
Great opportunity to dispel any myths and supply genuine data in regards to this modification.
The ONLY work performed on intake #1 will be the 3 angle, and simple blending of the new seat into the bowl(less then 3/4" deep)....
... looking at the splitter that is evident.
The other 3 will get ported.
This view shows that the oversized seats in chambers #1 and #2 have been blended, but careful viewing inside chamber 1 shows the blending is only so deep, and that the guides are still untouched
A different view, this time at the mostly finished #2, and the yet to be started #3

intake ports are done until after checking on the flowbench... which will come after cutting the 3 angle valve job.

With SV3 going out of business, what are you going to do for the future with regards to these exhaust manifold gaskets?

I was in on the original development on this gasket. **IF** SV3 goes away, I'm pretty sure I'll still be able to get the gasket.

Thanks!
The head is now ready to go back to the shop for it's 3 angle...........
The chambers are partially finished, major deshrouding has occurred, but final volume can't be set until the valves are set on their seats.

Hmmmm, I missed a post....
Remember this head came with an ITB adapter. Well this ITB adapter is a well designed piece! I'm pretty sure it is a TecArt ITB adapter, and I'm a fan!
Once I did the taper on the intake port roof[s]... the intake adapter is such a nice fit.... and notice the wonderful angle down now, instead of horizontal
I wish I had @ my disposal a T3 adapter so I could put them both on the bench...

back in my care to get the bowls, and seats set to a consistent diameter, next week it goes back to have the cam clearances set, and then back in my care once again to set chamber volumes.
My client is using Mahle type F/A pistons, so chamber volume will be set to 37cc, to give him a static compression of 11.8:1
