Well... a few things to point out.... a few of the pics showed Japanese text, and for those who were looking carefully they also saw no EGR, and they saw a MAP based EFI. So this engine is JDM.
But not just any JDM engine, this one is rather rare as this one was came from, and will be going back in..........
a Black Limited.........
(photo below edited)
400 cars were produced. This rebuild... with a few tricks, will be going back into the Black Limited it came from.

Very cool! Is this the engine that you need the bluetop cam covers for?

dismantling begins........
Each and ever piece coming off the engine gets tagged and bagged........ (some new parts also in frame)
With the head off the block, it now goes out to get cleaned and checked, one thing is certain... this engine has 9.4:1 pistons. There is something else certain in this view.... ???
bearing numbers noted... can you see which crank it has??
.... and the head disassembled, nice looking cams....
especially considering this...... now no more (except deburring the rest of the head)
more to come....

Re: OST-050 - A VERY special build
Been a while....
part of this build is a complete restoration of the engine back to the condition(appearance) it was 32 years ago. And in that vain I've notice that the block[s] I've worked never looked like they carried paint originally.... and apparently they DIDN'T!
From 2 very reliable sources I've found out that Toyota didn't paint their engine blocks back then, but had the blocks phosphate dipped, that is how Toyota treated the blocks. So in that vain, this block is getting a very similar treatment, the coating on this block will mimic the original, but be a bit harder, longer lasting.
Along with the blocks restoration, the head, including the entire intake, right down to the T/B, has been sent out to be soda-blasted. Once the head is back I'll begin the port work.
before....
Soda blasting is similar to other surface cleaning(sand blasting, bead blasting) but is completely harmless and water soluble - cleans up with water. I'll have an after pic in about a week.
I did clean and test the AAV (warm-up valve under T/B)... it appears to work...
with the block prepped for a new coating, and the head and intake off getting soda blasted... the internals wait on a familiar shop cart...
More to come....

Are those stock rods with press-fit 18mm wrist pins? I can't remember if those 10:1 pistons had 18mm or 20mm pins.

The 10:1 pistons were available in BOTH 18mm, and 20mm wrist pins........
These are 18mm wrist pins...

and a bit lighter too
I decided along with the new 10:1 pistons, that the light weight wrist pins will work nicely in this engine. The 23+ gram (nearly an ounce) saving will help allow the engine to accelerate/decelerate quicker, as well as lower the stress on the rod.
btw.....not sure anyone picked out the older design head gasket......... That type (from Toyota) hasn't been around in quite a while...

Re: OST-050 - A VERY special build
Well... some good news, and some not so good news......
The not so good news first... The soda blasting was nearly a total waste of time, money, and energy. The manifold, t/b, and TVIS plates will all need to be glass beaded.
Glass beading means that the T/B, and the TVIS plates need to be completely disassembled prior to blasting to avoid the glass beads remaining and damaging the rotaional surfaces of these pieces. The AAV can not be fully disassembled, so I've been working with aluminum jelly to get the surface as "bright" as I can. Once the T/B come back, I'll see how close the two are to each other and "adjust" as needed.
I've recently found out that Toyota did not paint their blocks, but had them dipped into a black phosphate solution. This information comes from 2 highly reliable sources - one worked for TRD back in the early 1990s, the other is VERY well known to the Toyota, and 4AGE community.
So I spent a few days calling machine shops in and around the greater Portland area, and found no one doing phosphate dipping of engine blocks. There were a few smaller shops that did offer a black phosphate dip for hardware, but they couldn't physically dip, or coat the block. So with a phosphate dip out of the question, I found another solution......
This isn't flat paint, nor is it semi flat paint, in fact this isn't paint at all, it is far thinner then paint (.25-1.5 mils thick, vs 1.0-3.5 for most spray paints)
The only downside to this coating is its total curing time of 3 weeks!!
more to come.......

Ceramic coating? If so, that should help the block shed heat.
I made the mistake of bringing a block to a local machine shop just for cleaning & inspection to make sure it was usable. I asked for it to be cleaned, and checked, but not painted... and got it back painted black. I wouldn't have minded if they had painted it silver, which is what I would have had done.

I haven't forgotten about this build........
The head is now ported, and now has a fresh 3 angle - chamber volume are measured before machining.....
and the volumes are.....
So to get this chamber back down to about 36cc I'll have it machined .010". The block was decked .004", and I'm planning on using a .036" MLS gasket.
How much less distance (thousandths of an inch) will there be between the cams, and the crankshaft then there was originally?

from another forum - Bean wrote:The belt lenght between the markings for the crank pulley and the stock exhaust pulley is fixed. Reducing the distance by decking the block/shaving the head brings the pulleys closer together. To compensate the exhaust pulley will be pushed ever so slightly counter clockwise.from another forum - d3nso wrote:Could also be advanced it depence on the installation or do I miss something?
There for to correct this situation one would use an adjustable pulley.
Dan please correct me if I am wrong
I've been waiting on more conversation (and to confirm for myself.... )
most of the people I consulted didn't really know... they just knew to set up a timing wheel and let the mechanical condition of that particular engine determine how much timing to adjust... but many couldn't agree as to which way (advanced/retarded) it worked......
d3nso - is technically correct, you could move it a tiny amount the one way, or a much more significant amount the other.
now is it retarded, or advanced... photos frequently help me.....
as Bean described... as in the view above, the pulleys (BOTH) move about 1.5-2.0 degrees counter-clockwise. Another thought though would be to keep the pulleys stationary, and move the crankshaft clockwise to take up the slack.....
moving the crank clockwise 1.5-2 degrees to take up the slack means we have retarded cam timing. To confirm, we go back to the cam pulley, and visually rotate to correct... we move the cam toward the "A" to correct for the machining
A LOT more to come... pretty soon.....

but "pretty" needs to go to the CORE....... (upper view = 1 & 4 @ TDC, lower view = 2 & 3 @ TDC) a fully balanced bottom end... not only pretty, but BETTER then OEM
Can you find any(all?) of the new balancing??
and to go along with a balanced rotating assembly... more balance.... from the new OEM pulley to a new Toyota pressure plate, and yes even a Toda flywheel needed a tiny bit of balancing...

I see 1-3 rod caps have been shaved a bit, and the 1 & 4 thinner counterweights have new holes. Everything is so clean, it's hard to tell which of the larger counterweights has new balancing.
Is that an optical illusion, or are those domes coated? I guess it's the rougher surface not reflecting the light like the outer edges of the pistons.
Nothing nicer than seeing a newly-balanced rotating assembly

the main counter weights also got a few small weight/mass adjustments.... domes are not coated... just a lighting thing.

I've always thought of the valve covers being a sort of champagne silver. A slight gold tone to the silver. At least based on the few OEM painted VCs I have.

I'm not rolling my eyes at you... but the journey to get these right/correct.... that I FINALLY can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It begins over a month ago... I've spent more time on researching, and chatting with powder-coaters in this time then I did ACTUALLY working the head! It began while searching for the factory color... I found NOTHING, I spoke to a few knowledgeable people - including those who advised me about the block, and no one could offer me help... so I began the journey... if I knew more about coatings - paint /powder/epoxies this would have been less dramatic, but I know flow, and engines, not so much coatings.
Having nothing to go on, I did a Google search, and found many pretty renditions of the 4AG cam covers, but very few ACCURATE color matches. With the poor search results, I turned to looking at powder coat swatches online (color is tough to get right... the internet doesn't help here ) I looked through Prismatic swatches and found "Satin Titanium"
But... as good as it looks online... it didn't look good comparing it to the cam cover
I figured I needed them painted, and so began looking at spray paints. I began looking for silver titanium paints, and I found.....
That was a bit darker and a bit too silver, and a bit too shiny - I wish actual colors were required on the can - that would make matching a color easier then guessing if the cap was a good representation of the color.
Next I found "Satin Nickel".....
THAT color is pretty close.....
and "shifted" to a bit more silver...
BUT........... commercially available spray paints are NOT durable They scratch easily and if they were sprayed with Brake Clean or similar chemical.... the paint lifts immediately
about 4 weeks have now passed, and frustration is building, I go back to Prismatic and with your thoughts, "A slight gold tone to the silver", I begin to look at gold/silver mixes......
Things are looking up so I contact another powder coater and go to his shop... and although he says he has every swatch (he doesn't)... so of course all 3 of these colors are not in his wad of swatches I could order the swatches.... but then I ask him a question... (if you look real close at the covers, they have a texture to them) and I ask him if the powder would remove the texture, and he says, "yes" - NOT good.....
another big BUT... the powder coater knows a painter, and he uses automotive grade paints (not removed with Brake, or Carb cleaners), and not only that he works with a paint supplier who has color matching capability...
I left it with them... they should be done in a week-10 days.....
I HOPE!!!!
more to come......

Re: OST-050 - A VERY special build
Thanks for the info about the VC colors. I was hoping to "restore" a set for a wall display I want to do in my house, and was hoping that I could get the correct or "close enough!" main color at a powder coater. I'll probably have more trouble trying to match that early 16v blue or the smallport red-slightly-orange lettering.
I've got a set of early 16v, 4A-GZE, and smallport VCs for my wall. I was hoping to add one of those early FA covers too, but I never had the money at the time.
Also of note, that early 16v valley cover (others may be the same) is a sort of metallic black. Almost a really dark grey with some silver specks in it. Gunmetal maybe?
