Hi everyone,
My brother and I just got our motor in from getting rebuilt and we came across a few issues/questions and we thought the best place to ask was the Club4AG community.
Question 1) Spark Plugs: Are 16v and 20V spark plugs interchangeable? If so which NGK plugs would work and would they have to be off a USDM AE92? Gap?
Question 2) Oil Filter: We had a custom header made by JSP to fit both the 20V 4AGE and future proof a 7AGE. We currently have the OEM filter 90915-YZZF1. The issue we come across is the height of the oil filter, it hits the header and keeps use from mounting the header to the head. Is there any other alternative shorter(height) oil filters we can use for the motor? Would this TRD one work? https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/20v4age/trd-oil-filter-all-models-4ag-and-1zz-2zz-engines

Re: Freshly Rebuilt 20V Silvertop
Are you using the OEM oil cooler plate? There are two different types from what I understand, one of which angles the oil filter towards the front of the engine (timing belt side) a little bit. I believe it's the plate found on the MR2 and AE86. I think the AE92 GT-S is a flat plate. At least on my AE95 it's a flat plate (though it's for the 4A-FE engine / exhaust).
Edit: found a post here showing both types of OEM plates. I may be wrong about the MR2/AE86 one, it may not angle as much as I thought.

1 - NGK #BRK6EP-11 (order online or at any auto parts store).
2 - you can remove the entire filter assembly, as long as theres no thermostatic oil cooler plate. remove the plate and install this part# from the dealer. it allows you to mount the filter directly to the block. most likely wont need a smaller filter at that point.

Rogue-AE95: I removed the oil pedestal from the oil filter spacer eliminator.
morgan: The filter is mounted directly to the block already using the oil filter spacer eliminator from Battlegarage. Would #90404-19001 cause any issues with the oil returning back into the motor? I want to make sure the filter is appropriate and won't any issues with oil starvation.

I had the same oil filter-header interference you are now facing. I've used the YZZF2 for over 25,000 miles with no ill effects (I change oil/filter every 3500)

oldeskewltoy: do you push the car at high revs frequently? Just curious about the oil cycling in a performance setting.
Rogue-AE95: I'm having trouble finding NGK #BRK6EP-11. I'm even looking for them on Rockauto.com

Gabriel,
the part you bought from BG, is 90404-19001. You'll have no issues with oil return.
BRK6EP-11 doesnt show up, look up "NGK 2978", i recently bought these however...
DENSO 5304 or equivalent ( https://www.sparkplug-crossreference.co ... /BKR6EP-11 )
Toyota #90915-YZZD1 oil filter is shorter than the YZZF1. I can get you an OAL if you want. But Dan's recommendation of YZZF2 is good too. The YZZD1 & YZZF2 are just slightly different in diameter, but will both seal for you just fine, on the block.

Morgan: thank you for sharing your knowledge. I ordered the YZZF2 filter. I also found the NGK-BRK6EP-11 plugs on ebay. Now i'm waiting for everything to come in.
Question 3: Is it recommended to break in the motor using synthetic oil? If so what weight do you guys all recommend?

Not typically... IDEALLY you want a break-in oil for the first start, and first 500 miles or so. I've used Joe Gibbs BR30 for a number of engine rebuilds... all quickly seating the rings.
There are other Break in oils, or break in additives... all pretty much use high zinc levels to aide in break-in.
As to a weight, 5w-30, or 10w-30 has always worked for me

I have not yet used this at a full-on trackday... but I'm not entirely sure it matters.... for I have a thermostatically controlled oil cooler.

Re: Freshly Rebuilt 20V Silvertop
Update. So I ended up getting the YZZF2 filter. It still makes contact with the custom header from JSP. I also realized it makes contact with the small block off plate that is part of the SQ relocation kit. So I will have to get the oil relocation kit and also file down the small plate to fit the header.
Question 4: SQ engineering did advise against using the T3 crank pulley and suggested I use a MRP one. With that being said is it fairly difficult to take the crank pulley off since the motor hasn't ran? Use an impact gun and swap them out? Also for re-installment what would be the torque specs? How would I keep the motor form turning when I tighten the crank pulley bolt?
