Re: 20v bt not starting
TOLD YOU THE VALVE WAS HITTING SOMTHING!!!
Re: 20v bt not starting
Ya def. somethign bad going on there. I am working with the company that sold me the motor on a solution so I havnt opened it up yet. Kinda sucks waiting. I just want to driv emy car lol ahhhh!
Re: 20v bt not starting
Might've lost a keeper. Be patient though, my silvertop has been sitting for three years while I've been in school (finally had enough money to rebuild it), my current build is a two-year long SR5-GTS conversion that has never been insured and even once the engine goes in I still have to swap diffs, fix my fuel system, swap struts, get new wheels, finish my manual rack conversion and replace the rear end with T3 kit before the car hits the road. Then I still need to buy a body kit, paint it, buy new seats, replace the front suspension components with T3 kit, install a pile of frame reinforcements, and then I'm rebuilding the engine this fall with a new ECU, valve train, pistons and rods.
Short story is that patience is a virtue.

Oh I know lets rewind a little
2008 stock 4age (swapped)
2009 stock 4agze (swapped)
2010 7agte (blew up with in a week of being built)
2011 7agte (blew up 2 weeks after rebuild)
2012 7agte (blew up again a week after rebuild)
2013 20 bt D.O.A.
From 2010 to current my car has seen 200 miles. I cant be much patient much longer!

Re: 20v bt not starting
ive been building one since i graduated from high school 8 years ago... only drove it a total of like 3 times in the past 8 years....
gts to standalone black top all done by me.
i even went to school for 1 year fullerton automotive at city college to learn the proper ways.

Bent valve = lots'a valve lash/gap = sound of large valve lash
That what your sound is?

I've only a little experience with this, but I think sometimes the sound can actually be the valve ticking of the piston can't it?

Re: 20v bt not starting
^ yes! the bent valve stem can be bent and restrict it from going back "into" the valve guide. therefore creating contact between piston and the valve.
Re: 20v bt not starting
I definitely understand that, trust me, engineering student here. I was more interested in that the valve being bent also means it's essentially stuck down so that the cam lobe strikes it much farther in it's rotation, creating a 'tick'. Not something I'd considered until now.

Re: 20v bt not starting
ooo ic what you mean instead of the gradual depression of the bucket by rotatation of the lobe. the lobe would strike it suddenly since the bucket is lower then usual and further down the "Stroke"
Re: 20v bt not starting
Exactly, which is why even though I am studying mechanical engineering I really love things like these forums and my tradesmen friends, they teach me different ways to approach things that I might not consider. I hope it will make me a better engineer in the end

Re: 20v bt not starting
Also, bent/stuck/hanging valve = ZERO compression!!!!

Re: 20v bt not starting
Just a quick update. I still have not taken the engine apart but I did get a decent deal on a 20v head. So the new head is at the machine shop getting checked out. Now that I settled the engine dispute with the selller I can oper her up. Maybe I'll get lucky and its a valve or something... SO get this kicker.............
I went to start it and show my buddy the horrible noise and nothing it was as quiet as can be I reved it still sounded great. After about 5 mins it started back up again tho. LOL very weird!

Re: 20v bt not starting
Might've just been a sticky valve

Re: 20v bt not starting
yea static problems are the worst. your valve stem might of snaped. you shouldnt run the engine. in my expeience. if it sounded good for alittle and then bad again. the problem just got worst.
Re: 20v bt not starting
I had a tick once that actually went away because the valve had not been receiving sufficient oil (in all fairness, the 2.0 in the MK IV Jetta is notorious for burning oil). Did a quick top-up, ran the engine and the tick disappeared. Engine's still going strong two years later, so it might have been due to your engine needing to get cycled after sitting for so long.

Re: 20v bt not starting
I donno. I got to get my lazy ass up and take that head apart
Re: 20v bt not starting
Pull the intake and exhaust off, shine a light in the intake and exhaust. If the valve stem broke you'll see the valve, cycle the engine with a wrench to see if they're all operating properly
