Low compression on my bluetop 16v.

Postby Migorn » Tue Feb 18, 2014 4:13 pm

Recently had issues with my car starting and had a compression test done on it. On three of the cylinders the compression was in the 20s and on the fourth it was in the 70s. Trying to get to the root of the cause of low compression. The car ran two days prior to it not starting. The only issue I had with it before this happened was, first start up of the day it had a rough time. I'd have to give it a little gas when i started it to get it fired up. After driving for a few minutes, sometimes the idle would drop till the car stalled out. I can't think of anything else that would be of help regarding the issue right now, but can try to answer any questions that could help get to the root of the problem asap. The car has been my daily for awhile and I need to figure out what to do.

Thanks

A leakdown test will be the best way to track down where it's leaking.
Either that or just plan a full rebuild and check or replace everything while you are in there.

How many miles does the motor have on it?

compression test it, then put a couple drops of oil in each cylinder and comp test again. Higher numbers after oil, usually points to rings, otherwise it could be valves, or head gasket, etc...
Good luck

With 190k on it I would just plan on a full rebuild or a swap so I wouldn't worry about the source too much.

If "in the 20's" means between twenty and thirty, then your engine
is either dead, or the cam belt jumped a lot of teeth.
