ae86 or ae92

Postby Tacobell86 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 1:49 am

Hey, so I'm new in the world of cars. Got my licenses and looking for my first car. The ae86 and ae92 have been on my mind for a while. I'm not a racer, so the car is gonna be stock. I want an ae86 but I'm scared that the parts for it are going to be hard and same for the ae92, since they're old cars. Now I was wondering how hard is it to fix them up if they do break down, and which one is easier to fix. BTW I'm not planning to restore one for a first car.

I'd go ae86, the car is much more popular, so there'll be plenty of aftermarket parts for it. ae92 is also good, it has no sort of tax on it (ae86's are plagued with the Initial D/ Drift tax) which means the cars are cheap, but the main gripe is that it's FWD. If you can find an ae86 for a good value, go for it! If you can't get a ae92. Then again, skip the whole fwd-ness of the ae92 and get a mark III supra. They go for around $2-4k in good condition. I'm not sure on the fixability on the cars.

From a practical standpoint, AE92 all the way. There is a much higher chance of finding one in much better condition than a AE86. They are both pretty easy to work on. I've done a clutch and transmission swap on my AE82 (pretty identical to a AE92) by myself in my garage in one night. CV shaft change in a hour or so.
Parts availability for replacement parts about the same, the AE92 prob has a better chance of finding parts in stock at local store. Its FWD so there's no driveshaft and rear diff to worry about. Junkyard transaxles are probably getting harder to find, but will be easier than trying to find an AE86 transmission. The FWD transaxle was used in Corollas up into the mid 90's. The AE86 ended in 87-88.
If you can luck into a Geo GSi, I still see a couple every once in a while, that'd be a sleeper, and a good chance it might be "granny" owned.

AE92 is the logical choice. They're cheaper and there are tons of part for 4af equipped cars - every junkyard has a few haha. Plus you can get upwards of 40 mpg with a 4af.

Best of both worlds is an ae92 daily and ae86 toy. Speaking from experience it's very easy on the wallet as long as you mend your own vehicles don't mind driving beaters pos'.

its funny i own a ae92 and im giving you this advice, but i say don't bother. i love my ae92, but as everyone here has stated, what plagues these cars are parts replacement problems. you really cannot get anymore weather stripping or any type of weather protective (taillight gasket) things for the ae92 anymore. i'm pretty resourceful and even i'm feeling that in a couple years it will be hard to replace any exteriors trim body panels. for a dd i would get something made in the 00's.

From all of these comments, I'm probably going to get an ae92, or just something more modern that way I don't have to deal with mechanical problems. I would like an ae92, I just question it's reliability for being an older car. I found one for a good price with 122k miles.

If your going to get a car in that weight class you minus will get an sc300, way better suspension design and looks better imo. If you want a faster car get an mr2, I've owned 2 and they are easy to work on. Don't let the mid-engine layout scare you, there is good space if you know what your doing. Most mk3 I've seen need big tires, big brakes and big power to hang with the lighter cars.

BTW If you wanted practical NOTHING and I mean NOTHING is more practical than a 5spd V6 camry.

I find my AE92 a lot of fun on the street, I wouldn't mind a AE86 but i would never get rid of my ae92 either. The styling is cooler too. AE86 just looks better to most of us because we know it has more street cred lol

And hell no to the mk3 supra, sorry to any owners of those, just my experience

Mechanically you can get an AE92 (or AE86 for that matter) to be rock solid dependable. What you'll prob run into is electrical difficulties. The wiring and connectors are old and can give problems. The starter circuit is famous. Watch out for places on the wiring harness that may have chafed and shorting. Injector plugs are brittle and will crack when you try to unplug. Luckily theres source for good replacements of those. Finding some of the correct shaped coolant hoses are starting to get hard too.
If you're concerned with aesthetics, then yeah, finding body panels is going to be hard. Interior pieces high chance the plastic is brittle and will crack.

I highly recommend not getting these AE86 or AE92 as "a first car".....But ONLY as a First "PROJECT CAR". AE92 mine be little too old. But very basic modern car.
I would recommend getting the best modern car around the Mid to late 90's or early 2000's model cars. I would hate you working on the car tooo much since more modern cars have more parts than our classics Toyotas.

But I would like to ask....How old are you?
