convert auto fx to manual

Postby oldae82 » Sat Oct 18, 2014 8:09 pm

I've found an '88 fx (not -16) w/ auto. I'm looking at it as a donor body for my '87 fx16 5-speed. How big a chore is the conversion?

FX is front wheel drive...

I'm guessing:
Tranny/ mounts
Clutch/ flywheel/ bolts
shifter/ linkage
axles (Possibly)
Clutch master cylinder/ slave cylinder/ hard lines/ soft line. (If the FX is cable clutch disregard)
Clutch pedal assembly

Thanks for responding. I guess what I most need to know is if the bodies of the auto and manual are the same i.e all the mounting points in the cabin and engine bay are there for either transmission option, or if they're different creatures.

I'd also add the brake pedal, which is usually different from auto to manual cars (don't know about the FX, but most likely). Autos typically have a wider brake pedal than a manual.

How close to Fresno CA are you? I have an '87 you can pick at.
One shot, one kill.

Not too sure about FX, but AE86 uses a different cross member to bolt to the chasis

Thanks for the thoughts. I've pretty much decided its more work than it's worth. I'll have to obsess over something else.

Auto and manual chassis are the same. All you need is
Tranny (can use a ae92 one)
Rear and side driver tranny mount with brackets. Front one is the same (ae82 only)
Shifter links (can use ae92 shifter links)
Clutch slave cylinder (ae82 only)
Master brake cylinder (ae82 only)
Hard lines from brake master to slave cylinder (ae82 only. But I heard u can modify ae92 hard lines)
Axles. U can use ae92 axles 1 piece design. Less of a hassle
U can use auto ae82 brake pedal
Shifter (ae82 or ae92 one)
Rewire reverse and bridge big flat wires that go into auto trans so it can start
It took me like 2-3 hrs to put in and have running. And I was taking my time.
Its not hard

That's pretty slick. Would still have to convert the rest of the fx to fx16: wiring, brakes, suspension, but you've made a major part of it seem simple. Thanks.
