4AGE AE86 new buyer looking for some help :D

Postby freshlyfaded » Thu Jun 04, 2015 11:09 am

Hi guys,

Any help would be greatly appreciated, please be patient with my crappy knowledge with AE86 and the 4AGE engine.

So I have been driving Nissan Silvia for the past 10 years and now I am finally breaking away looking into getting my first AE86. I've been doing a lot of reading into the car and what to look out for when buying a AE86.

1. The main thing I've learnt is look look out for rust as it is very important as this is the hardest and most expensive part to fix. Look out for rust in the body and chassis but its okay on front guards, boot and bonnet.
2. Make sure chassis is straight and haven't been in a big accident

Engine parts can be easily replaced and rebuilt

I have found this AE86 at a price that I am seriously considering. The car is 1986 and running a Blue top 4age and I have attached a picture of the VIN plate. If anyone could take a look and see if this legit as I'm sure I've read some where that AE86 1983-1985 are blue tops and 1996-1987 are red tops. The owner said that he sure that the blue top came with the car. Everything in the engine bay seems legit however is very dirty and not clean like most other ones I've looked at so it tells me that the engine has not been rebuilt or be replaced. This worries me because the body has done over 190,000 KMS so does that mean I will need to rebuild this engine very soon.

He took me for a drive and it runs smoothly and not dodgy sound coming from the engine. He has also rebuilt the gear box recently. The body looked straight but both front and back bumpers doesn't sit flush, there is about a finger gap between the bumpers and the body if you can see on the pictures where it connects to the front fenders. Also it has freshly painted within last year so would this hide any body rust?

Please take a look and would appreciate any advice you can give me or how you feel about this purchase.

Thanks a lot and looking forward to joining the 4AGE community

TRY not to use colors on the 16V engines... it gets mixed up and confusing... with that said this photo may help you a bit.

***IF*** the engine is original(1986)... it is 9.4 to 1 compression, 3 rib block with the "smaller" crank and rods, with a largeport head. There is some inaccuracies in the above photo. One of these inaccuracies is 7 rib blocks were available earlier in 1987 then June.

Now for the BIG BUTT..... after 30 years ANYTHING, any combination of 4AGE parts could be in there!

Thanks mate lesson learnt, therefore this car has a GEN 1 4AGE in it. But as I said the engine bay seemed like it hasn't been cleaned for 20 years so I assume that the engine is fully stock.

when I bought mine I asked if I could take it to a nearby mechanic and get it on a lift. Paid 95 but got assurance that frame hadn't been damaged, no visible rust from under neath, and no crazy leaks.
