Hey guys this is my first post on the forum as i have just joined
this is my 84 Levin coupe



next weekend i will be ripping out the old faithful 4age to make space for the 4agze turbo (yes i know the throttle bodys upside down )

its currently apart to be checked over prior to fitting just wondering about a few things
What management are people running the only other 4agte 86 owner i know of in the uk is using power fc but they're very hard to get hold of i was thinking Megasquirt and some sort of coil on pack system using the t3 trigger wheel

also a bit stuck on what gearbox/ rear end to use any input would be helpful

im currently in the process of buying a 86, im trying to learn about everything, but i do know for a fact im doing a 4agze turbo. Im just having problems looking for some good ECUs, I plan on running a stand alone for fuel, do you have any input or suggestions because the 86 is like a whole different world lol this is my first tuner build. Im switching to tuner from muscle lol

Hiya Elliott and welcome to club4AG

Nice car you have there, and a big project to be starting out with !!

What management are people running... I was thinking Megasquirt and some sort
of coil on pack (plug ?) system using the t3 trigger wheel. Also a bit stuck on what
gearbox/rear end to use any input would be helpful.

I don't have a turbo 4AGZE (yoshimitsuspeed is the man for that !) but I have
looked at what is involved, and will start the ball rolling.

Assuming your car still has the factory T-50 gearbox, that will bolt up to the
4AGZE with the addition of a spigot bearing to the end of the GZE crankshaft.
The T-50 will get you started and will last OK if you don't abuse it or try putting
more than 250hp through it or side-stepping the clutch at 5000rpm

Same thing applies to the factory 6.7" disc brake rear end. If not abused the
rear end will hold up long enough for you to find out what kind of power you
are making, and see if you are going to need to upgrade.

The question of engine management gets a bit more complicated. If you are looking
at Coil on Plugs (COP's) then you really want to be looking for an ECU that has four
ignition outputs and can be configured to fire them sequentially. If you are looking at
double pole Coil Packs as factory fitted to many more recent model cars, then you only
need two ignition outputs that can be fired alternatively (wasted spark).

Almost any current version of ECU should be able to handle either setup, and manage
both fuel and ignition for your turbo install. Bear in mind that unless you are lucky enough
to score a base map from an engine identical to your own, you will need help in setting
up the ECU and getting the engine tuned so that it will run safely. This means taking the
car to a tuner to get the ECU programmed under load on a dynomometer. So, before
buying your ECU, check with the tuner you plan to use to make sure he is familiar with
the ECU you propose, and confident he can make you a good tune.

You will also need a bit of hardware... COP's or coil packs; Cam Angle Sensor (CAS); MAP
sensor (2.5bar good for up to 21psi boost), water temp sensor; air temp sensor; WBO2
gauge (highly recommended); GZE fuel rail and injectors (minimum) etc etc. A good ECU
should be able to use factory sensors, otherwise you can usually get them from the ECU
supplier at extra cost. You will need to get an ECU wiring loom to customise for your car.

Thanks jondee86 great info thanks for taking the time to reply , car will be tuned at a local mx5 specialist with a lot of experience with megasquirt set ups i have the 4agze injectors and rail , but i also have some supra 450cc ones and i was hoping to utilise the map , coolant temp, oil pressure sensors from my 4age set up and taking my oil for the turbo by t-ing off from the oil pressure sensor, in regards to loom i have a cut off one from the mr2 the engine was removed from hopefully i can make one out of my current loom and the mr2 ones from what i was told by the previous owner injector plugs would need to be swapped,

aren't there diyautotune members with squirted 4AGs ?
They would seem like the obvious choice, with a plug n play to get your boosted 4AG up and running quickly
We have such a guy that does it for starions..... starting ~$550 ready to run. Works well. Helluva deal
All these old car groups seem to have such individuals..... 2.3 fords, miata, etc...

Completely forgot about this thread was just browsing and came across it

So I've made a bit of progress over the last few months at great expense

Engines all built up I managed to find a w58 trans with a4age conversion bell housing
Ecu wise I went for a Haltech elite 1500 with a whole bunch of spaghetti I gotta terminate along with a aem wideband and greddy profec boost controller, annoyingly I bought the boost controller before buying the Ecu otherwise I would have gone Ecu controlled boost. But hey I'm a sucker for nice bits
Engines now in and mechanically fitted just need to sort out a loom and buy coilpacks I was looking to go for some Toyota yarris 4 pin Denso ones which should be able to wire straight to Ecu and run wasted spark due to no cam sensors
The end is in sight

Forgot again
So a year or so later of trial and error the turbo was just too small for the engine was running out of puff top end and only made 165bhp on the dyno, was still very fun to drive until I had a clutch slave blow on me 120miles from home so
so managed to source a refurb hks gt2530 turbo which should hopefully be better suited but it meant everything hot side needed changing due to the t3 flange, water and oil cooling and non v band exhaust housing
Also while it was off the road I fitted a walbro 255 pump, an fuel lines and a general tidy up ,also changed the final drive from 4.77 to 4.3 for a bit more top end

looking good, I'm running a turbo 4agze as well. Did you decide to go with the megasquirt ECU?

Nice job... when you DIY stuff its not often that it works out perfect the first time round.
But you gain experience and you learn so that you can do it better the second time round

I went for a haltech elite 1500 in the end, very easy to use and user friendly software would recommend highly

Nice, I hear good things about the haltech ECU, I went with megasquirt myself. It isn't bad once you get the hang of it.

@ellzbmx - I'm assuming that holset turbo is your original turbo? What are the details of your original turbo that ended up being too restrictive? I'm really curious as I'm trying to plan a GZE turbo build myself, already have a coil pack smallport GZE and megasquirt, just trying to do as much research as possible on the rest of the details.
