4age 20v intake

Postby hachirokusoarer07 » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:46 pm

Okay so call me stupid but i need a breakdown of how this intake system works. i get the gist of it but I'm having troubles with the whole short manifold, individual throttles, and velocity stacks. Anything helpful would be great just trying to understand how it works. use to have an 86 but it had a 4agze and i was always a fan of the na 4age 20v. Thx :D :D

oh yea and does it really reach 11500 rev or do i hafta like change cams or something...

The induction system is a resonance tuned system, and includes the lengths/diameters of the individual runners calculated from the back of the valve seats to the end of the trumpets of the individual intakes for each cylinder, plus the volume of the plenum that encloses the trumpets all the way back to the AFM if a silvertop or the clean side of the air filter inside the airbox if a Blacktop.
The idea is to try naturally "supercharge the air into the cylinders to maximize volumetric efficiency.
As for a 20V being able to run to 11.5k, that is NOT going to happen with a stock engine. Neither the valvetrain nor especially the oiling system including the oil pump will take those kind of revs.
Both the Silvertop and the Blacktop are good to about 8500 rpm as produced. Maybe a short burst higher to 9K, but not any sustained rpm at those levels.
These engines are tuned to run good at about 7500 rpm or so. To get higher rpm liveability, you need to change cams, rod bolts (maybe rods), valve springs, oil pump and most likely other stuff.

There is a writeup here on the Club4AG.org forum about what it takes to even get to run 9000 rpm with any reliability. See here:

Note the parts list and Machine Shop services to even do this type of build. Just bring bags of money $$$$$$$!
