F series 7.5" TRD 2 way vs Torsen

Postby Phil Bradshaw » Sat Aug 31, 2013 1:51 pm

Got a couple of projects in build, one is a SA60 Celica coupe (1983) with live axle. Got a 1UZ and W58 in it plus modified F-series Crown disc rear end. Currently got Altezza Torsen in it. Also building Ford 105E Anglia with Altezza BEAMS and 6 speed, with narrowed Crown rear end on the cards. Remote chance it may get a ST205 3SGTE i have lying about eventually.Have got Torsen for that too. Both will be primarily road use.

Have acquired a 7.5" TRD 2-way LSD and unsure whether to keep or sell to finance other bits. Had JZA70 Supra I converted to 1UZ with W58 and that had factory 8" G-series Torsen and I was really happy with it for the 7 years i had it hence preference for these diffs. Am concerned theTRD will be a bit too aggressive for real world road use. Conversely if Torsen proves a bit weak behind the V8 the TRD might be a saving grace. Realistically at least a year before the Celica will be on road due house renovations (groan) but have opportunity to sell TRD to finance some other goodies.

So am after opinions on Torsen vs TRD for road use. Thanks. Phil

HOLY...... long time Phil.... glad to see you still exist

for road use... I'd recommend the Torsen... if it breaks... then go with the TRD

If you plan to do any drift trd 2way. Street and grip do the torsen if its a newer unit (ie altezza).

Torsen doesn't have the locking characteristics of a clutch lsd. The main caveat is it basically acts like an open diff. if a wheel lifts.

However...

I have an aftermarket clutch lsd on my street car and it's way too aggressive and noisy imo. I would gladly swap it for a Torsen if I could. I don't drift though.

I'm not sure if the lockup rate is adjustable on the trd lsd, but it's worth looking into if you go that route. Set it to a lower lockup rate if possible so it's less aggressive. I wish I did that on my cusco lsd before installing.

I would not use a torsen in a live axle car. As Deuce mentioned, you'll spin up the inside wheel when you lose grip or lift a wheel lifts during cornering. I even get wheelspin in my torsen equipped Miata under the right conditions.
