84 sr5 coupe
I just picked this car up today. Its a popup headlight automatic. That's all I really know. Money shouldn't be too much of an option over the next few months. A 5 speed swap will not happen due to knee injuries and I need to know where to start. It definitely needs more power but with only 112k on the engine and body it probably doesn't need a new engine. Any help would be awesome.

Not much you can do with that motor. Sorry to hear about the knee injury, the 5speed swap makes night and day difference.
Start with a Weber carb or modify the OEM one to perform like a Weber. Thats the best thing you can do for it. Check the link below for more info on modding the 4ac.

If you want more power, the next best thing is to consider a motor swap. I just swapped mine to 5 speed, if you need any automatic transmission parts let me know.

Any certain plans for it yet?
Re: 84 sr5 coupe
Handling first. Chassis stiffening. Wheels. Beef up the transmission. Maybe a 4age swap with a turbo last.
Edit: glove box door latch first. Where can I find one?

So I just drove a 4agze swapped 83 four door. Now I want more power. What kind of work is involved in a swap like that?

There is a LOT of work involved in swapping out the 4AC engine to a 4AG engine. There's a writeup thread, but to do it properly you need to find a GTS donor car for the easiest and cheapest method.
As someone has already said, the best thing you can do is swap out the carb for a Weber 32/36. Gets rid of the rats nest of vacuum lines under the hood and gives you better power, response, and MPG.
Paradise makes a 4AC racing kit that includes new valve springs, the carb and kit, and a new cam for ~700.

IMO the GZE is a waste of time.
The US GZE ECU can't handle more than 8 PSI without piggybacks, grunt box, or aftermarket engine management.
The SC12 is decades old, horribly inefficient, not rebuildable and harder and more expensive by the day to find replacements.
Tear those things away and you have a 4AGE longblock with GZE pistons.
If you can find a GZE longblock to start a turbo build that's a good route or you can start with a 4AGE (preferably 7 rib) throw some good pistons in it, strap on a turbo and be good to go. In your case you will need to figure out engine management but IMO wiring your car for a GZE ECU would be a huge waste. I believe the NA ECU with small mods has more potential. The only way I would consider the NA ECU is if you are confident you would be completely satisfied with about 150 WHP. Otherwise I would just wire it for good engine management from the start. There are a number of good options such as Megasquirt or even some affordable full blown options such as the EMS-4. Get this with a wiring harness from Tweaked and you would pretty much just need to install the harness, plug it in and start tuning. http://matrixgarage.com/products/ems-4- ... ent-system
You might spend a little less on wiring a stock ECU but your capability will also be much less.
You might find this helpful.

Let me know if you are looking for any parts that aren't on my website. I can help you with suspension, engine and most other stuff you could need and can usually give unbeatable prices on package deals.
Re: 84 sr5 coupe
I was thinking about picking up a 4age, tearing it down, and building it for boost. I figure if its done right it will still make more power without any boost that the stock engine and adding a turbo later on. But will it work with my auto trans?

Re: 84 sr5 coupe
How much power are you looking for?
The stock 4AGE can practically run up to about 8 PSI practically on the stock ECU. With aftermarket engine management at least 15 PSI should be safe and reliable if tuned right.
Starting with a built motor is one option and if you plan on rebuilding the motor anyway then you might as well but if you have a healthy motor the other option is to start with it and see if you are happy with the power levels it can handle. If not then you tear into the motor later. Like I said try to find a 7 rib motor. With that you just need some good pistons and you are good to go.

Re: 84 sr5 coupe
Eventually around 200-250 rwhp. I figure that is plenty of power for such a small car.

Okay, yeah pistons would definitely be a good idea at that point.
You could still start out on stock pistons if you decided to build up slowly then upgrade when you were ready to go big. For that power range I would still try to keep the compression high. If it was me I would aim for about 10:1 but that means your tune would have to be real good with no mishaps. 9.5:1 would gain you a little more margin for error. Or you could do a little bigger cam and 10:1 to gain a similar margin for error.

I was thinking 9.3:1 with a Brian Crowed 1.8 stroker for the bottom end. I have no idea about what head to run but it would definitely be shipped out to get a port job. and nothing sounds as good as big cams and ITBs.
Or something really cool like an IS-F engine and trans dropped in with a Celica Supra rear end.
