Im not really a sound system kind of guy but i have a sony touch screen headunit rockford fosgate 12" sub with 1000w amp and rf speakers front and back. Came with the car sounds good. Coworkers were nutting all over the rockford fosgate stuff so im guessing its good stuff

Re: Audio
I have minimum stuff. Really anything that is relatively name brand that fits will sound good. So a head unit, amp(for subwoofers only or all speakers; your choice) but if your door and deck run off the head unit it will sound alright... Honestly it doesn't take a ton to make these cars sound good. Stick with the basics because what sounds good in the rolla, sounds like crap in other cars...
I have an 07 Acura TL-S and I have twice the power and amount but I get in the rolla, turn it up and can barely breathe.

That is a sweet setup
Re: Audio
Best advice is listen to it before you buy it. You won't know what's really perfect for you unless you get a chance to hear it in person - we all like our music reproduced differently. (All the various materials/construction styles of speakers influence how they sound immensely) Sound rooms at the big box stores may not be ideal, but they'll let you get a jump on things. Then just track down a deal on what sounds best to you elsewhere.
To a degree though, it won't really matter what you install depending on your situation. The car has a ton of ambient noise to begin with. Add in the usual interior stripping, sound deadening removal, rose jointed suspension bling, thin sheetmetal with tons of air passthroughs, noisy accessory systems, and typical 95+dB exhaust, and you see where I'm going.
Once I get the mechanical side straightened out I'll move on to the interior and sound on my own car. I'll likely add 40-60# worth of stereo and soundproofing - Not because I want to shake windows going down the road, but because a quiet interior cuts down on stress and exhaustion while driving. As tiny as 86's are a single sealed 10 might be plenty (assuming it's correctly sized/installed). It's currently got a pair of blown paper 6x9's in the rear deck that don't yet frustrate me so long as the bass is pulled out of them because there's enough background noise to drown them out and I have more important nonsense to deal with first. (That's saying a lot)
If you go with stock sizes and locations, you'll want a way to highpass filter the fronts. Regardless of their ratings, 4" speakers don't tolerate much in the way of low end. Doesn't really matter if it's at the headunit or even inline bass blockers. (most headunits will handle this front/rear/sub now anyhow) If you go with components in the doors (bass driver + tweeter that will require cutting) they're usually equipped with their own filter setups.
I'm a fan of OEM look, but wouldn't pay a premium for it. I do have a JZA80 headunit that's acting up a bit. If I have to replace it I may see if it just needs cleaning/reflowed.
Sorry for the wall of text. Hope it helps. ^_^

Re: Audio
As said above, biggest problem is that an AE86 is NOISY inside !!!
The previous owner of my car stripped the interior and sprayed that blue
sound deadening coating over everything, then put the interior back with
extra sound absorbing material under the carpets... still nowhere near as
quiet as any late model sedan. Reality... quality sound systems are wasted
in an AE86 due to the high ambient noise level, but having said that, I put
in a small system...
6-1/2" splits in the doors with the tweets up the top of the doors, sort of
inside and just below where the door mirrors mount. Passive crossovers
down beside the mids. Single 10" sub in a custom sealed box. Used two
small amps, one driving the splits off the front channel, and the other low
passed and driving the sub off the rear channel.
Sounded OK round town, but couldn't compete with road noise at highway
speeds. Haven't used it since one of the amps died, and don't miss it
Cheers... jondee86

Re: Audio
I have the oem dash speakers and 2 small ones on the parcelshelf and a pioneer headunit. Sounddeadening removed but i still have full interior and despite some outside noises it plays very well. When i put it all the way up my rear window and trunk starts vibrating so it's enough for me.

Pretty much all there is to be done. Moving the front channel to the doors allows some semblance of imaging. If the car wasn't constructed of thin-walled beer cans and seam sealer it'd have a chance. It also wouldn't be the same car.
I've got a few hundred square feet of Dynamat Extreme laying around from a job a decade + ago, if I ever get the car reliable enough to daily (at this point, I'll take going down the road at 45mph without a wheel passing me as an improvement) I'll spend some quality time with NVH. Thinking about hanging MLV behind the dash/over the blower unit/firewall/etc as well as sealing the rear 1/4 inner skin, etc.
The list ahead of sound - Wheels staying firmly attached to hubs , complete front end rebuild (underway), clutch master/slave (done - doubt the previous owner's slave/line job), rear brakes (need to replace sliders/bushings), prothane kit, wiring gremlins for days, and if I get ambitious the rear 1/4 windows are leaking via the trim. Oh, a distributor seal set as well. I'm only comforted by knowing I bought a basket case in advance and having paid accordingly. I can't imagine someone buying one of these thinking "It's a Toyota, what's the worst that could happen?"

Re: Audio
When I bought my car, it had a pioneer 4 speaker system (just a budget Walmart kit) with all 4 speakers mounted in the rear dash. I took the liberty of installing a couple 4" kickers in the dash to get some sound in front of me. I am an audio guy, but after digging through my entire car and finding 0 sound deadening or insulation, I gave up. I don't really see the 86 as a proper candidate for a system. It is far too noisy at highway speeds to even enjoy it.
But my suggestion has already previously been stated by a couple others. If you feel the need, go listen to things for yourself then do a door install in the front.
