Kona-
" Its an island, where can they go!"
Same same all over. it is a comment on our times, not just our places. In Juneau, Alaska, they had 22 miles of paved road and there's no way to get out past that. So car thefts usually mean someone "borrowed" your car to get to a bar. But they STILL have thefts.
A dog can be a mixed blessing, some of them go crazy every time the postman comes around, some of them sleep through riots. Better to put in a good home alarm system, plan it carefully with perimeter and proximity sensors and cover the area where the car will be at the same time. I'd still say the best way to go is with systems (home and car) that notify YOU when there's a problem. Central station is good, loud sirens sometimes ignored, but something that notifies you, at least gets the news to someone who gives a damn.
On a home system, check out the Honeywell Lynx 5100. Lots of options (which can make it complicated if you get into them) and designed to go totally wireless if you want, so you don't have to drill and wire and repaint. You'll have to go around changing batteries every two years instead. Can use a central station, can send out alerts by cellular phone, landline, internet...lots of options. If you've got a garage or carport, you can add proximity sensors to cover that, or even put one IN the car and the wireless link would still alarm it.
Remember, car thieves are sacred to Pele, you must return the thief to the volcano if you catch him. <G>

Prepaid cell phone, set to mute and autoanswer, wired into the 12V system and hidden away.
Police will be able to track the GPS on it and call to listen in on the baddies.

Lojack inbound?? They used to only sell through authorized dealers, and you had to buy it installed by a dealer. Available direct now?
