Bob Strangarone's RS-R Scion FR-S

Bob Strangarone, who stated autocross shortly after he got his Scion FR-S in 2012, has been consistently building his car and participating in grassroots events.
This year for 2015, the third season, he is lifted into high spirits, lowered on RS-R's custom tuned Sports-i Club Racer.
Winning already two of the three autocross already, we are off to a great start of the season.
Like last year, due to the Supercharger by Innovate/Sprintex, he is now classed in Street Modified and suspension has been re-calibrated accordingly with Club4AG and RS-R Staff to meet Bob's unique driving preference.
Equipped also with Cusco Limited Slip Type RS at 55/20 ramp and 100% clutch pack setup at full initial torque spring setting for immediate low speed action to negotiate small corners quickly and immediately.
Select Cusco braces are used but not all according to legality in Solo2 rules.
Suspension linkages consist of parts from Whiteline, RS-R, Raceseng, and SP, and we're still tweaking it for more competitive setup.
Winmax W3 brake pads on stock calipers comprise enough stopping control and efficacy with Hoosier A7 tires and Enkei RPF1.
Since supercharger mapping was originally street tune, the car was re-tuned by Delicous Tuning, where it was characterized to fit Bob's driving and autocross better.

Of course all these parts added simply doesn't make a race car fast. And to complete the fine calibrations are some of us at Club4AG, everyone at RS-R, and always in conjunction with Counterspace Garage who's quickly becoming a grassroots racing central for FRS users and complete and superb maintenance by Infinite Motion, and fabrication work by the renowned Bluemoon Performance.

Still, there are awesome challenges ahead, as the FRS platform is new to Street Modified class where there are formidable custom rigs from all walks of automotive racing.
We hope to get Robert to more podium and trophy positions this year!

Schedule Details:

Classroom Meets at various venues local to discuss and exchange ideas with instructors and gather necessary conceptual elements and basic understanding of physics in dynamic control of a car.

Balcony Area Testing Grounds provide actual driving dynamics practice, in a safe and controlled, sanctioned environment with instructors for improvement and satisfaction of ownership and learning how to control a car. The goal of the events will not be for the sake of racing, but to understand how cars are driven in a performance venue, with skills to maximize the use of the car at speeds and control the automobile proficiently.

Features:

Autocross, Gymkhana, Pylon cone lesson areas, games, and class sessions with Q&A.

Required:
A qualifying automobile in good maintenance
A SA or MA 2000 or newer Helment or an FIA rated helmet.
A good set of tires, and spare pair or set if you can bring some.
A basic set of tools to safely change tires
An assistant is optional and useful
A will to learn, behave, and make friends.
A driver's license from any state or province of USA
A driver who is 18 years old or older.
Shoes, not sandals, slippers, or boots.
A good attitude
A friendly demeanor
A respect for another person and property

What is NOT required:
Animosity to a particular car
Evil intents
Huge ego
Any significant modifications to car or person
Children or pets that needs supervision full time (unless you bring someone over 18 that can supervise them full time)
Alcohol is prohibited as are any controlled substance in the State of CA
Entourage of people who want to cheer you on, and get in your way.
THis is a classroom, and a school... So don't bring anything or anyone you don't want in school...

IN addition your car needs to be:

Not leaking oils and fluids
Not catching fires
Free of issues of electrical, fuel, or other critical areas mechanically.
Tires more than 1/8" tread usable tread.
Parking brakes and main brakes functional
All lamps functional
Seatbelts, and seats, that are DOT approved or FIA approved. (factory belts are DOT approved)
Wheel nuts and studs with more than 5 turns to secure.
Hubs and steering system in good condition
We reserve the right to refuse any participants for partial or full refund if we deem your car or equipment not fit for the event with minimal requirements.

A gathering of FRS/BRZ at the heart of sin, World famous Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

44 cars gathered to celebrate almost the 1 year anniversary of the Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ.

The tour took us through the #Valley of Fire National Park, on a 160 mile tour of the Nevada Deserts, and Mohave.

The night-time hosting of a small amateur SCCA Solo II autocross event, and a celebration gathering at the Fletcher Jones Toyota dealership. — in Las Vegas, NV.The usual summer heat of 115'F weather never faded any of the owners, and we all had a blast meeting new owners from the Mountain States and Northwest as well!
The FR-S and BRZ community just gets merrier every month!

Automatic Headlight Circuit on Scion FR-S

The Scion FR-S, unlike the Japanese counterpart Toyota 86 or even the Subaru sibling BRZ, does not have an optional automatic headlight circuit in the first introductory year, 2013 models.
However, this doesn't mean that you can't have it.  Here, I will show you how to add it using a simple aftermarket photo-trigger system, rigged in to the factory light switch and make it all work.

What you need basically is the following to make a nice clean install that replicates the original equipment when you are all done.

1. A generic photo-trigger system like DEI's model 545T here: http://www.deiproducts.com/servlet/the-52/DEI-545T-Nite-Lite/Detail
2. A factory Subaru BRZ turn signal stalk with foglamp and automatic headlight switch to replace the Scion part. (Make sure you get the LEFT HAND DRIVE model from USA dealers, as Japanese RHD models have the turn signals lever and wiper stalk flipped backwards and will not fit)
3. An electrical connector pin, common to modern Subaru, Honda, or Toyota small plug harness. (to make an extra wire to tap in to the blank pin socket.)

With these 3 things and a little experience with electrical connections, you should be fine.

Caution: With any electrical or fuel system service, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY so that you are safe from line-shorts and other hazard/mishaps.

Step 1: Take all of the un-necessary wires from the DEI 545T off as you will only need the 4 pins, to tap into the factory wires, and we will not even need the aftermarket relay on this install.
You should have on the main 7 pin socket, just the yellow, black, and red.  And on the relay socket just the blue trigger wire.

Step 2: Wire these 4 wires into the factory harness as follows.

The Red wire should go to a constant 12V (+)voltage source at the ignition switch or anywhere else you can readily tap nearby.  There is not a full headlight ampere load on this and is only to power the small box so any outlet is fine, that is properly fused and not critical to the main operation of the engine or the vehicle dynamics)

The Yellow should wire to the ignition trigger circuit 12V (+)

The Black wire is what turns the whole box on and off from the switch, by closing the negative side circuit of the unit, so this has to go to the pin on the headlight switch that has the ground output at AUTO position.
This is because most modern Japanese car's sub-systems are all triggered and switched via negative ground side, and the AUTO mode on the headlight is no exception.
If you look into the factory 20 Pin connector for the above mentioned AUTO/FOG switched stalk, the necessary pin connection here is #19.   However on a 2013 Scion FR-S, since the feature is not optional, you will notice there is no wire or pin in this slot #19.   So you need to take the extra pin you bought (or stole from another Denso socket) and insert it to the Pin 19.

This is the pin that has the fatter lighter blue 16 gauge blue wire in the following photo.

After connecting the Pin #19, the last wire, is the Blue wire from the DEI 545T, the ground trigger wire.  This needs to go to the pin #20 (where you see I tapped on the white with silver dot, factory wire.)
When the unit senses low light condition, this wire feeds negative ground to the main headlight switch, and activates all headlamp circuits automatically with key ignition ON.

Step 3:  Take the Photo-Cell sensor and attach it anywhere it can see daylight, and becomes dark at night.  We've chosen the factory location at the base of the front window, and on the defrost vent panel.  The DEI photo cell fits snug and neat, and by drilling a hole for the wire, no wires need be exposed either for a clean finish.  However, it does require removal of the dash cluster and other parts to fish the wire to below the dash, so that is up to you.

Plug the Photo-Cell into the DEI 545T and all factory connections back in and basically, you are done.
You can check on the system by putting it in AUTO mode, and ignition on...  And if in the day, covering the Photo-Cell should trigger the headlight on within a few seconds.   If in the night, it should turn on by itself, and you can shine a bright light like a iPhone strobe directly into the cell, and system should trigger the headlight OFF.

Well, I hope this was clear enough...  

BTW: the white pin #4 on the factory socket is the FOG LAMP trigger, and it is a negative trigger.  With the DEI 545T install, you should have a pair of nice standard BOSCH relays left over, that you can keep for the time when you want to install fog lamps to this switch as well~!!

 Meng Tea's Scion FRS

Seen often at local Southern California meets and Scion events, Meng Tea's Scion FR-S is a pretty familiar sight these days.  But despite the frequency of his outings as a representative of FRS86, a So-Cal web club and online retail outlet, his car never seems to stop evolving.

Despite the huge amounts of new parts that seem to become available, Meng chooses his parts carefully, not only to visually stay in theme with his visions, but to collaborate with many talents to make sure all upgrades are functional and effective.  His love of going "deep down" with the ride height is never compromised with rough ride or depreciation of handling balance.  The RSR Black-i that he is jointly developing with Club4AG's Moto, and RSR USA, is focused on going low.  It's a change up from RSR's Sport-i meant of the track, this Black-i is designed for outstanding ride on street use, and riding visually low without compromising stroke range or compliant ride quality, and ultimately the handling balance within the constraints of what is functionally available at such height.

Meng sports a number of differnt wheels each time, but this time he has on, one of his own favorite, the Enkei RP-F1 with 18" diameter.   Together with RSR, the performance and ride is complimented by the Falken FK453 which are the testing benchmark tire for this application.
Recently, he gained the styling cues from the addition of the new MV Designz lower claddings and upper body is finished off with Beatsonic USA's roof spoiler and fin antenna and tail wrapped with Five Axis Design rear spoiler.  Most of the outer cosmetic trim are replaced with Japanese-market lamps, and badges, as well as other small pieces that tell-tails that Meng is very much in the know of all things FT86 around the world.  Interior parts are not skimped either with Pioneer/Scion system complimented by the best-in-the-business sound stage of OEM Audio+ Reference 400, along with other touches to match his exquisite imagination.

Scion Racing Testing/Media Preview Session
Toyota Speedway of Irwindale.

Ken Gushi and Fredrick Aasbo gets to shakedown thier cars for the first time in public with media present to shoot photos.
We were lucky enough to be on the roster for this preview and will share the photos from this day.

Preparing for the 2013 Formula D Season, Scion Racing goes out to Toyota Speedway of Irwindale...

With several dozen horsepower more on the FRS, and with magic re-tune of KW suspension and arm configurations, Ken seems to be in much better control of the FRS, and gained forward traction in mid-throttle dart from apex to apex.  I immediately saw that from corner to corner, mid-course transitions, the car will grasp the road with the rear wheels much more tenaciously than I remember from last season, and simply put down more of the available power from point to point.

Fredrick seems to be extremely happy with the all-new engine and added power for the tried and true tC, now even more tailored to Fredrick's style of smoother throttle application and less sharp inputs than 2012's Tony Angelo.
It really seems to be a big improvement in driver's connection to the car for both teams, and this means the action will be sharper, closer, and faster than last year.

Together, they are looking already to be in top contention, even on the first day of testing today~!

RS*R Black-i Suspension - When looking slammed is not good enough

Club4AG's gang gets an early preview of RS*R's new stylish concept Black-i.

Developed for ultimate drop, but working the magic that RSR does with anything, all-in-house built shocks from valve to shell, every piece developed and hand assembled.
You get what you pay for at RSR, and this one is no exception.

We're developing this Black-i for those who prefer to ride lower than the track-compatible Sports-i, but still want to preserve that very magical comfort and high level of precision that can't be replicated with others.

In-House development in Japan and USA, hand-built to each automobile application, and designed for a specific focus of the customers.
And now in a fine-tuning stage for final product for USA, on LA's worst roads to make sure it is compatible for our rigorous conditions.

It will be available approximately in early May from RSR USA.
