The Corolla was still RWD as were most of the competition in Japan, and the sole competitor was the Honda Civic which wasn't as large or modern in looks. For most of the competition it wasn't till 3-4 years later, a hatch of this class was set in dealer showrooms. It sold so well that Nissan pretty much cloned the dimensions and style cues for their B11 Sunny/Sentra that came about in 1981. Ford had acquired a stake in Mazda shortly before, and this car was also rebadged for Ford in places where shipping their European Escort wasn't ideal.

In the USA the Familia was renamed the Mazda GLC as in the past generation RWD FA models, and really saw a jump in sales here as well, selling neck to neck with the Escort made here in the USA. It actually gave Ford some ideas which didn't pan out so well in the 90's, but such was the effect it had on the world, twisting priorities for even the biggest car companies that saw its success.
It really was a world car that Mazda really didn't expect to sell in such large numbers, but it just became the right car for the right time in many parts of the world.

It wasn't till about 1985 when a Corolla would catch up with the FX (AE82), and when in 1984, the Civic (AS/AT platforms) swept the trophy away with their PGM-FI ZC engines and a whole new definition of a compact performance car since the Golf GTI.

They're pretty much forgotten outside of Japan, but for the folks who started their first driving experience in Japan in the 80's, this is one of the iconic cars they have almost always had seat time.

I'd love to see a nicely restored one in the USA at JCCS next event.

In 1982, it also gained a turbocharger, that sat right on the intake manifold to boost it to some unheard of power in those days. 110hp! from a 1600cc.

Anyway the Orion engine nor this weird dual stage manual made it on the market long, but it certainly makes the list of the weirdest gadgets to make it onto a mundane 2 door hatchback.

The car was also sold in the USA as Plymouth Champ, as well as the Dodge Colt Turbo.

Picture 2 is the support bracket on the back side of the engine bay on the firewall. The bracket for the "performance rod" or what we call, "strut brace" has 60% thicker sheet metals. This is also very minor for street car loads but in racing it may be slightly stronger for some tiny handling improvement.

Picture 3 and 4 is the most interesting. The C-Pillar section spot-weld points for jointed sheets, have been greatly increased (11 vs 17 points) to improve structural rigidity, and as result, and combined with #1 above, should improve overall resistance to deformation under dynamic loads in corners, and also reduce load-induced noises and bucking. In production terms, this allowed the car to be sprung with lower pressure gas compression setting for the shocks, enhancing the ride quality and retaining the handling, by resisting dynamic alignment changes of the body, even while under larger loads. Giving the car slightly more mature and refined feel.

Fun huh? Geeky subject perhaps and negligible in terms of real-world differences for most people. But it is one example of how car makers like Subaru and Toyota are constantly drilling at details. The testing is conducted by DEKRA a 3rd party contractor for precision and dozens of vehicle parameters. And this year, even fuel economy accuracy, and deviance from retail catalog in numerical specs were scored as part of advertising integrity of the makers.
It's one award a maker can't 'buy & bribe' in the world of automobile.

And in the process of all that took place with hundreds of cars, in the sports car category, the Toyota Supra took the sports car category, edging over the Porsche 911(992) and others for the prestigious award. (I was wondering why Mr.Tada cancelled his plans for this week and headed straight to Germany after SEMA! haha)

Also, Mr.Akio Toyoda has been elected into their Hall of Fame as an influential automobile figure of the year, joining the ranks of Henry Ford, Ferry Porsche, Agnelli, Iacocca, Schumacher, Hamilton, and Elon Musk among others.

The awards ceremony is being held as we speak, and Press Releases in Europe will soon follow I suppose.

So this is a very rare occasion for the open-topped limousine to be used in a public event.

Take a good look at the 10 minute drive of the Toyota Century Royal "Sumeragi 10" as this drophead Century may never appear in front of a video camera for another decade or more.
The last time the open limousine (then a Rolls Royce Corniche Drophead) was used in a parade was when the Emperor as price had the wedding with princess Masako.

On the list of cars to be sold (not confirmed official) are...

Supra GRMN, with upgraded engine, rigid chassis tune, and revised brakes and suspensions.

Base "builder's SZ package" Supra for those who customize or prepare race dedicated cars.

A GT4 Customer Package (non street) racing car program for professional GT4 teams.

CH-R GR Edition, with retuned suspension and interior/exterior packages.

Corolla GR Edition and Touring Wagon (also with GR Edition)

And faint clues on a $40,000-ish "GRMN" Full Performance edition Corolla, complete with significant driveline differences and very limited numbers to be built at the Tahara factory. (Those of you who aren't versed in Toyota factories, this is one of two elite crafting site, along with Motomachi plant, produces some of the most precious Toyota cars like LC, LS, Land Cruisers, and skunkworks cars like the LFA and where A80 Supra and Celica GF-FOUR were built in the past.

The Century GRMN is also rumored to become available complete with performance upgrades used on Akio's own concept car, as well as the Emperor's protected model.

A Yaris GRMN, also related to the GRMN Corolla above, which might also be the shared sister platform limited edition from Tahara.

And of course the continual updates on the progress of the 2 million buck, GR Super Sport ultra-super-extreme-oh-my-god car which is basically a tamed street package of the TS050 LeMans LMP1 car....
